Provisional Sigil

The Provisional Sigil (Ψ) is a temporary, conditional marking applied by a Librarian-Provisional to a holding within the Tower to grant it immediate, if limited, reality and facilitate its initial cataloguing and assessment. Unlike a permanent sigil, which anchors an entry into the archival fabric, the Provisional Sigil operates under Provisional Reality, a legal-mnemonic principle defined by Clause 7.1.5 of the Third Concordance. It is physically affixed to the holding itself, prefixed to its temporary shelf-mark, and appears in all associated documentation, signifying a state of administrative flux.

Function and Application

The primary function of the Provisional Sigil is bureaucratic efficiency. Upon the arrival of a new submission—whether a physical object, a conceptual system, or an anomalous event—a Librarian-Provisional can immediately apply the sigil. This action renders the submission “real enough” to be handled, measured, and cross-referenced without awaiting the lengthy deliberations of a full Curatorial Panel. The sigil is most commonly encountered during the intake process detailed by Elara’s Protocol, where it is stamped onto the holding and appended to its provisional shelf-mark (e.g., Δ-Ψ-4409). This procedure is a core component of the Dewey-Sigil System for preliminary classification.

Its application is also mandated for objects under a Provisional Research Permit, for the architectural frames of Provisional Apertures (where it is affixed to the lintel by the Central Registry), and as the sealing mark on draft provisions such as Draft Provision 881.α. It is the visual marker referenced in the Writ of Provisional Tenancy, appearing in its watermark.

Limitations and Cancellation

A holding under a Provisional Sigil exists in a legally vulnerable state. Its reality is contingent and can be rescinded or overwritten by higher-order sigils. The most common cause of cancellation is the application of a permanent sigil, such as the Sigil of Perpetual Custody or the Sigil Alpha, which automatically voids any provisional marking. Furthermore, as per Circulation Ordinance 12.b, any active Provisional Sigil associated with a holding’s previous location is automatically cancelled upon the application of the Circulation Sigil during a transfer.

The sigil does not confer protection from ontological degradation or archival contradiction. Holdings marked with (Ψ) are often stored in the Vestibule or other transitional stacks, and are explicitly excluded from certain protections, such as those afforded by a Chronostatic Seal.

Controversies and Scholarly Dispute

The authority of the Librarian-Provisional to invoke reality, even provisionally, has been a point of contention. The Fourth Concordance, Annex δ, implies that the Provisional Sigil merely acknowledges a pre-existing latent reality within the submission, a position championed by the Realist School of Archival Theology. In contrast, the Constructivist Guild argues, citing Clause 7.1.5, that the sigil actively imparts reality through a performative bureaucratic act; without the stamp, the submission remains in a state of “non-indexable potential.”

A more practical dispute concerns the “Ψ-Residue” phenomenon. Some archivists, notably those from Floor 440, assert that the ghost of a cancelled Provisional Sigil can persist in a holding’s metadata, causing subtle cataloguing errors and minor reality tremors. This is dismissed by the Central Registry as superstition, attributing such effects to improper application of the Sigil of the Closed Fist during cancellation procedures.

Notable Uses and Precedents

The sigil’s most documented use was during the processing of the Thirteenth Palindrome, which arrived with 47 contradictory descriptions. A Librarian-Provisional applied the (Ψ) to each description simultaneously, creating 47 provisionally real variants for comparative analysis, a case study later formalized in Elara’s Protocol.

It is also routinely used for Provisional Designations and was instrumental in the Submission for Concordance that eventually became the Addendum on Ephemeral Taxonomies. Its misuse—applying a Provisional Sigil to an already-permanent holding in an attempt to downgrade its reality—is a class-3 archival offense, though documented cases are rare.

Physical Description and Variations

The sigil is standardized as a single, spiraling character (Ψ) rendered in indelible, low-luminance ink. The specific shade is officially “Vestibule Grey,” though batches have varied from slate to a faint lavender. It is applied via a hand-stamp issued by the Curatorial Guild. While the form is constant, its size and placement are dictated by the holding’s nature: large and centered on architectural elements, discrete and on the verso of documents, or as a tiny prefix in digital indices. No functional variation of the sigil is recognized, though collectors of sigilology note minor stylistic differences between stamp generations.
