Sigil Placement Box
MS 3832.96 · Objects and instruments
An official Sigil Placement Box is a standardized, sealed receptacle used by the Department of Coherent Placement for the secure, documented transfer of a Sigil from one authorized party to another, and for the temporary holding of a Sigil pending final placement. The use of such a box is considered a mandatory formal step in any Sigil transfer that invokes the doctrines of the Sanctity of Placement or Principle of Permanent Placement.
"No Sigil shall be deemed to have altered its custodial state unless its movement is ratified by a sealed Placement Box, the number of which corresponds to an active line-item in the Register of Transfers."
Physical Specifications and Authentication
Standard Placement Boxes are cuboid, constructed from a single casting of archival-grade cerametal, and measure precisely 12 x 12 x 24 finger-widths. Each box bears a unique, laser-etched serial number on its lid, prefixed by the departmental code “DCP-”. The sides display in relief the Dewey-Sigil System emblem and the seal of the Functionaries of the Final Line. A box is considered inert until it receives its initial wax seal, which must bear the personal sigil-die of the transferring custodian. The interior is lined with a non-reactive foam composite, indentured to hold one Sigil of standard dimensions. Attempts to place multiple Sigils within a single box, or to place objects other than a Sigil, are reported to trigger a molecular-level resonance that fuses the box shut permanently, voiding the transfer.
Procedural Role in Placement
The box is central to the bureaucratic ritual of placement. When a floor custodian, such as a Sub-Librarian of the 71st Spiral, authorizes the transfer of a Sigil—for example, a Provisional Sigil being elevated to an Authoritative Sigil—the Sigil is first logged out of the local holdings register. It is then placed inside a blank Placement Box. The custodian applies their seal to the box's closure, at which point the box is considered “active.” The active box is then physically conveyed, typically by a bonded Librarian courier, to the receiving authority—often the Department of Coherent Placement on Floor 888. Only upon receipt, verification of the seal against departmental records, and a counter-signature in the Register of Transfers, may the receiving authority break the seal and extract the Sigil, formally completing the transfer. This process literalizes the principle of primum locatum, ultimum locatum for the Sigil itself; its location within the sealed box is a temporary, procedural placement that is superseded by the final, ratified placement upon unsealing.
The "Ghost Placement" Controversy
A persistent, albeit obscure, doctrinal dispute concerns the ontological status of a Sigil while it is sealed inside a Placement Box in transit. The hardline interpretation, favored by the Synod of Dusty Corners, holds that the Sigil’s “placement” remains anchored to its floor of origin until the box is unsealed at its destination, a state sometimes called “suspended custody.” A more radical interpretation, occasionally cited in appeals to the Third and Forty-First Concordances, argues that the sealed box constitutes a unique, mobile micro-floor, and that the Sigil’s reality is therefore both in transit and simultaneously present at both endpoints until the seal is broken. This “simultaneist” view is officially censured by the Department of Coherent Placement, as it would introduce paralyzing ambiguity into the Sanctity of Placement. Nevertheless, records from the 12,520s M.E. show at least seventeen appeals filed on these grounds, all rejected.
Variants and Specialized Boxes
While the standard DCP box is ubiquitous, specialized variants exist for particular classes of Sigils. A Null-Tether Box, used for transferring Sigils of Perpetual Custody, is lined with a lattice of occlusium wire, said to neutralize any residual placement resonance from previous holdings. The Diplomatic Box, employed for transfers between Tower bodies with competing jurisdictional claims (such as between the Dewey-Sigil System and the Archivists of the Silent Wing), features two seal-locks, requiring both parties to apply their seals before transit and both to be present for unsealing. Most infamously, the Void-Consignment Box is a black, unmarked variant with no interior lining, used only for the formal disposal of a revoked or annulled Sigil into the Sigil-Depths; these boxes are not serialized and are not meant to be opened again.
Inventory and Loss
The Department of Coherent Placement maintains a perpetual inventory of all serialized Placement Boxes. A box lost or damaged in transit triggers a Major Discrepancy Inquiry. If a box is lost while containing a Sigil, the Sigil is not officially declared lost until a panel of three Functionaries of the Final Line ratifies a “Presumption of Vacancy,” a process that can take decades. During this period, the Sigil exists in a administrative limbo—it cannot be used, cited, or its holding floor altered, but it also cannot be re-created or replaced, as its potential existence inside the lost box maintains a tenuous claim to reality. Notably, the successful retrieval of Sigil Alpha from the Sigil-Depths in 12,491 M.E. was facilitated because it was found still sealed inside its original, albeit corroded, Placement Box, providing incontrovertible proof of its chain of custody and thus its identity.
