Sigil-Depths

MS 4815.49 · Places and structures

The Sigil-Depths refers to the administrative and archival stratum of the Tower dedicated to the storage, analysis, and procedural invocation of inactive or dormant sigils. It is not a single, contiguous location but a classification applied to secure vaults, dampened annexes, and chronostatically sealed chambers across multiple levels, most notably within the infrastructure associated with Western Spire Sub-Level 9. Governance of the Sigil-Depths falls under Elara’s Protocol and is subject to the contested oversight of the Dewey-Sigil System.

Physical and Conceptual Locale

The primary physical manifestation of the Sigil-Depths is catalogued on Sub-Level 9 of the Western Spire, a region more commonly referenced for its association with the Hum of the Depths. The two phenomena are considered administratively distinct but physically intertwined. The Sigil-Depths are accessed via the Western Helical Staircase, noted for acoustic properties that allow incidental monitoring of sigil resonance states. The space itself comprises a series of lead-lined vaults, each suspended within a lattice of resonance dampeners designed to suppress systemic resonance bleed. Aperture 12-Sigma, the site of the Hum of the Depths incident, also serves as the main transit point for sigil transfers into the Depths.

Function and Purpose

The Sigil-Depths serve three primary functions, as enumerated in Annex γ of Elara’s Protocol:

  1. Secure Storage: Sigils that are retired, superseded, or deemed too volatile for active circulation are transferred to the Depths. This includes all revoked Provisional Sigils, contested Authoritative Sigils, and sigils rendered inert by a Sigil of Perpetual Custody.
  2. Resonance Attenuation: The dampener lattice gradually dissipates the latent authority bound within stored sigils, a process intended to prevent cumulative resonance events. The rate of attenuation is a matter of ongoing calibration.
  3. Procedural Archive: Every sigil deposited is accompanied by its full invocation record, creating a parallel, non-circulating archive of Tower governance. This archive is consulted during disputes over sigil precedent, though its authority is provisional unless released under a new Sigil of Passage.

Governance and the Dewey-Sigil Contention

Jurisdiction over the Sigil-Depths is a point of chronic contention between the Keepers of the Dewey-Sigil System and the Administrators of the Lower Stacks. The Dewey-Sigil System, which enumerates sigils beginning with Sigil Alpha, asserts that any sigil bearing a Dewey designation remains under its purview regardless of physical location. The Administrators of the Lower Stacks, citing the post-incident delineation following the Hum of the Depths event, claim exclusive custodial rights over all contents of Sub-Level 9 and below.

This dispute is currently mediated under Draft Provision 881.α, which remains sealed by a Provisional Sigil. The Sigil of the Closed Fist was last invoked in an attempt to force a resolution, but its authority was contested by a counter-invocation of the Sigil of Perpetual Custody, resulting in both sigils being consigned to the Depths they sought to govern.

The Hum and Sigil Resonance

A persistent area of scholarly inquiry is the observed correlation between the non-stochastic patterns within the Hum of the Depths and the resonance signatures of sigils stored nearby. The Vect interpretation posits that the Hum is not merely background noise but a low-frequency cataloguing of sigil states. Experiments under Chronostatic Seal 44-Delta suggest that attempting to mute the Hum directly impacts the attenuation rates of stored Provisional Sigils, causing unpredictable spikes in latent authority. Consequently, all proposals to install additional dampeners in Aperture 12-Sigma have been suspended pending a full Submission for Concordance.

Access Protocols

Retrieval of a sigil from the Depths is an event of the highest procedural gravity. It requires, at minimum:

  • An Authoritative Sigil of Retrieval, issued by a Librarian of the Fifth Order or above.
  • A matching Arrival Sigil deposited at the time of the original consignment.
  • Concurrent deactivation of the relevant sector’s resonance dampeners for a period not exceeding 47 seconds, as per Clause 12 of Elara’s Protocol.

Failure of any condition triggers an automatic resealing under a new Sigil of Perpetual Custody, and the retrieval sigils are themselves absorbed into the Depths. The only recorded successful retrieval in the last three apertures was for Sigil Alpha, which was immediately re-deposited after its authority was verified as having been fully attenuated.
