Authoritative Sigil
MS 1803.26 · Practices and doctrines
An Authoritative Sigil is a formally ratified sigil whose imprint confers a final, unappealable, and self-executing administrative action upon a document, object, or event within the Tower’s jurisdiction. Unlike a Provisional Sigil or an Operational Sigil, an Authoritative Sigil carries the full force of Concordant law and its application is considered a closed matter for purposes of review, superseding even contradictory provisions within the Concordances themselves.
Dewey-Sigil Classification
Within the Dewey-Sigil System, Authoritative Sigils occupy the primary classification block (α), with Sigil Alpha serving as the definitive model. This classification is maintained in the Primary Sigil Register at the Sigil-Depths. The key distinction is permanence: an Authoritative Sigil, once impressed, cannot be voided by any lesser seal. This principle is codified in Annex 7 of the Fourth Concordance, which states, "The authority of the primary sigil dissolves all provisional claims." For example, the Sigil of Perpetual Custody is an Authoritative Sigil that automatically nullifies any Provisional Sigil applied to the same subject container.
Imprint Mechanics and Verification
The physical impression of an Authoritative Sigil is performed using a certified Sigil Placement Box, calibrated to the specific resonant frequency of the sigil in question. The resulting imprint must demonstrate three verifiable qualities: irrevocable intent (manifested as a non-fading phosphorescence), logical sufficiency (the sigil's design must contain no open curves), and contextual isolation (it must not intersect with any pre-existing mark). Post-application, the document is subject to Sigil Authentication by a registrar of at least the Seventh Spiral. A successful authentication is often marked by the concurrent application of a secondary confirming sigil, such as the Sigil of the Steady Hand. The famed Arrival Sigil, applied to Form L-29, is a common example of this process concluding successfully.
The Paradox of Finality
A significant metaphysical debate, often termed the "Paradox of Finality," surrounds the nature of Authoritative Sigils. The Third Concordance asserts that an Authoritative Sigil "closes the book" on a matter, rendering it outside the scope of future amendment. However, the Miletus Fragment of the Second Concordance includes a clause (881.α) that was authoritatively sealed with the Sigil of the Closed Fist, yet was later subject to a codicil issued by the Paradox Control Bureau. This codicil, itself bearing an Authoritative Sigil, created the precedent for the Paradox of Authoritative Errata. Scholarly schools remain divided: the School of Unilateral Completion holds that the later sigil simply clarifies the intent of the first, while the School of Sequential Supersession argues that the later sigil creates a legally distinct, new reality, effectively voiding the original in all but archival reference.
Notable Applications and Precedents
Beyond foundational examples, several specialized Authoritative Sigils dictate critical Tower functions. The Circulation Sigil on a lending slate permanently transfers custodial responsibility. Sigil 8.14.γ-β, known colloquially as the "Winding Stair Seal," authorizes the irreversible reclassification of an entire archival wing. The most severe is the Sigil of Unreading, applied to texts deemed to contain autonomous contradictory statements; its application causes the affected pages to resist being opened simultaneously by more than one reader. The efficacy of any Authoritative Sigil is contingent on its correct application to a subject that exists within the Tower’s ontological framework, a requirement highlighted in the obscure but oft-cited case of Registrar v. The Phantom Folio.
Custody and Misuse
The physical dies used to impress Authoritative Sigils are kept in geographically dispersed secure vaults, with no single Librarian possessing knowledge of more than one location. Misapplication of an Authoritative Sigil—such as using it to seal a personal correspondence or a draft inventory—is among the highest administrative crimes. The prescribed penalty, detailed in Provision 12 of the Eighth Concordance, is perpetual assignment to the collation of fragmented cross-references in unfrequented sub-basements. Despite these safeguards, the historical record contains seventeen contested instances of "rogue authority," where a sigil's effects were observed without a verifiable imprint in the Sigil-Depths ledger, fueling ongoing theoretical work on sigil quantum-states.
