Custodial Sigil

MS 2859.87 · Practices and doctrines

“Formal verification of a completed transfer or declared custodial state, rendered as an indelible impression.”

— Manual of Custodial Protocol (Revision 43), Annex C

A Custodial Sigil is a formal, guild-issued impression applied to an object, record, or spatial boundary within The Tower to signify a material change in its custodial status or chain of custody. It is the primary mechanism by which the Custodial Guild administers and tracks the location, accessibility, and archival condition of the Tower's holdings. The application of a Custodial Sigil is a legally binding act under the Dewey-Sigil System, superseding any prior informal designations.

Physical Form and Application

Custodial Sigils are not merely stamped; they are imprinted using a specialized device known as a Sigil Placement Box. The resulting mark is a composite of raised and recessed elements, often incorporating a unique identifier for the issuing guild-member, a timestamp down to the second, and a cryptographic hash of the subject’s current archival descriptor. The ink or alloy used is stipulated by Concordance and is designed to be chemically indelible and radiometrically datable, preventing forgery or temporal ambiguity. Sigils are typically applied to a designated “sigil field” on an object’s container or, in the case of architectural features, to a permanent Sigil Plaque mounted adjacent to the aperture or threshold.

Custodial States and Sigil Hierarchy

The nature of the custodial change determines the specific class of sigil applied. A Provisional Sigil (Ψ) indicates a temporary or conditional transfer, often used for in-house repairs or short-term study loans. An Authoritative Sigil, such as the Sigil of the Steady Hand, confirms a permanent change in primary responsibility. The Sigil of Perpetual Custody (designation: Ωδ) represents the highest order, moving an item into a static, non-circulating state and automatically nullifying any provisional sigils. Disputes over sigil precedence, particularly when a Provisional Sigil conflicts with a newly applied Authoritative Sigil, are adjudicated by the Custodial Syndicate with reference to the often-contradictory Manual of Custodial Protocol.

The Sigil-Depths and Primary Register

All Custodial Sigils, upon application, are logged in the Primary Sigil Register maintained within the Sigil-Depths. This archive is not a simple ledger; it is a dynamic, multi-dimensional map of custodial relationships across the Tower. The Register allows for the tracing of any object’s custodial lineage and is the final authority in matters of Sigil Authentication. Guild members dispatched to the Sigil-Depths for verification duties undergo a seven-year apprenticeship, due to the complex and non-Euclidean nature of the Register’s indexing system.

Operational and Ceremonial Sigils

While most Custodial Sigils denote a change in responsibility, certain specialized sigils govern function rather than custody. The Sigil of the Closed Fist, for example, denotes a higher-priority custodial function and carries right-of-way privileges in Spiral Passages. An Arrival Sigil is applied not to an object, but to the receiving location, confirming that a transferred item has been formally accepted into a new custodial zone. The Circulation Sigil is a rare, time-bound sigil applied to items approved for inter-floor travel under strict escort.

Controversies and Ambiguities

The system is not without its paradoxes. The case of Sigil 8.14.γ-β, an apparently self-applied Custodial Sigil found on a treatise regarding sigil theory, sparked a decades-long debate on recursive custodianship. Furthermore, Clause 14(b) of the Manual of Custodial Protocol states that a sigil applied in error must be superseded by a “Sigil of Recantation,” yet no such sigil is listed in the Dewey-Sigil System. This has led to the practice of applying a standard Authoritative Sigil alongside a marginal annotation, a method the Custodial Guild has repeatedly petitioned the Syndicate to formalize.

Sigil as Object vs. Sigil as Practice

A critical distinction, often obscured in common parlance, exists between the Custodial Sigil as the physical impression (the object) and the act of its application (the practice). The former is a tangible artifact subject to analysis and authentication; the latter is a bureaucratic ritual that alters the legal and metaphysical standing of the subject. This duality is central to the Dewey-Sigil System, which catalogs both the sigil-objects (e.g., Sigil Alpha) and the protocols for their use. A sigil without the properly witnessed practice is considered a “dead impression,” while a documented practice without a verifiable physical sigil constitutes a “ghost custody,” both states requiring immediate remediation by the Sigil-Depths authorities.
