Sigil of the Steady Hand

The Sigil of the Steady Hand is a permanent, non-transferable sigil applied via hot-iron branding to the ulnar ridge of the right hand of successful candidates to the Silent College, conferring both authority and a permanent somatic limitation.

Physical Properties and Application

The Sigil itself is a stylized, open right hand, palm-forward, with lines indicating perfect stillness. It is rendered in a proprietary alloy of powdered archival ink and ferric salts, which is heated to 480°C (as per Annex C of the Thirteenth Concordance) for application. The branding ceremony is conducted within the Sigil-Depths under the supervision of at least three Master Scribes of the Silent College. The resulting mark is a permanent, matte-black scar, approximately 4 cm in width. It is noted for its lack of raised keloid tissue, lying flush with the skin, which is considered a sign of a candidate's physiological compatibility with the sigil.

Conferred Authorities and Restrictions

Possession of the Sigil of the Steady Hand grants the bearer, now termed a Silent Porter, the following permanent authorities:

• The right to handle, transport, and temporarily custody any object marked with a Provisional Sigil without triggering its voidance clauses.
• Immunity from the binding effects of any Operational Sigil below Grade IV.
• The authority to witness and validate Sigil Placement Box transfers without the standard requirement for a second declarant.

Concomitant with these authorities is the primary restriction: the branded hand may never again be used to make a mark. This includes writing, drawing, stamping, or applying any other form of Sigil. The hand retains its full strength and dexterity for carrying, sorting, and gesticulating within the Silent College's codified hand-signal system, but is fundamentally incapable of creation. This enforces the Porter's role as a neutral conduit, not an originator.

Relation to Other Sigils

The Sigil of the Steady Hand exists in a complex hierarchical relationship with other key sigils. It is considered subordinate to the Sigil of the Closed Fist, the emblem of Scribes, which represents generative authority. The Steady Hand cannot override an Authoritative Sigil. Most critically, it is automatically voided upon any attempt to displace an item protected by Clause VII.ii ("That which the Tower has placed, no hand shall displace"), rendering the bearer's authority inert. It has no direct interaction with the Sigil of Perpetual Custody, as their functions—temporary conveyance versus permanent holding—are considered orthogonal.

Scholarly debate persists regarding its classification within the Dewey-Sigil System. Some archivists argue it should be enumerated as a variant of Sigil Alpha (the Sigil of Passage), given its focus on motion. Others contend it is a unique, meta-sigil governing the bearer rather than an object, and thus falls outside the System's purview, a point the System's own clerks frequently dispute.

Voidance and Consequences

The Sigil is voided only upon a bearer's violation of its core restriction (attempting to mark with the branded hand) or through a direct conflict with a higher Concordant law. Voidance is not a removal of the brand, but a cessation of its conferred authority. The physical scar undergoes a documented transformation, the black pigment leaching out to leave a pale, greyish imprint. The former Porter is permanently exiled from the Silent College and is typically reassigned to manual labor in deep-stack repositories, where the faint glow of Creeping Phosphor-Moss is a constant reminder of their former station.

Physiological and Humoral Effects

Long-term bearers report a numbing of fine tactile sensation in the branded hand, coupled with a notable resistance to fatigue. This is often accompanied by a low-grade emission of Procedural Melancholy, which is considered a manageable occupational hazard rather than a dysfunction. The Sigil's alloy is inert and shows no interaction with other substances, though bearers are required to wear standard-issue linen gloves when handling certain organic specimens, such as Specimen 881-1901 ("The Sower's Hand"), as a precaution.
