Aborted Inductions
MS 0900.56 · Practices and doctrines
Aborted Inductions refer to the incomplete initiation rites for entry into the permanent custodial staffs of Floors 200 through 499, a class of procedural failure codified under Clause 14, Annex C, of the Third Concordance. Successful completion of an induction grants an entity both permanent residency on a specific floor and, crucially, an existential frequency harmonized with that floor’s core resonance. An aborted induction leaves the subject in a state of administrative and ontological limbo, possessing neither a finalized residency permit nor a stable existential signature.
Procedural Framework and Causes
Per Concordance guidelines, an induction is a three-phase ceremony overseen by a Provost of Calibration. It involves: 1) Tonal Alignment, where the subject’s intrinsic frequency is measured; 2) Resonant Coupling, where that frequency is attuned to the target floor’s archival matrix; and 3) Registral Inscription, where the subject’s name and new frequency are logged in the floor’s Central Index. An abortion can occur at any phase due to a variety of sanctioned causes, including (but not limited to) dissonance spikes exceeding 7.3 sigmas, sudden materialization of a contradictory prior claim to residency, or the Provost receiving an authenticated countermand from a higher-priority induction in a temporally adjacent stack. The most common cause, however, is the premature exhaustion of the specific type of Forgotten Resin required to anoint the induction sigils, a logistical failure for which the Supply Clerks of Central Index are frequently cited.
The Status of the Aborted
Entities undergoing an aborted induction are not formally reverted to their prior state. Instead, they are issued a Provisional Pending Designation (PPD) and their case is transferred to the adjudication queue of the Atrium of Aborted Resonance on Floor 441. Here, their unstable frequency is captured and sustained within one of the Atrium’s Acoustic Traps, preventing further decay while their status is reviewed. During this period, the entity exists in a “grey stack”—able to physically inhabit the Tower but unable to draw salary, accrue seniority, or be held fully accountable for violations of floor-specific ordinances, as their jurisdictional affiliation remains unresolved.

Scholarly Disputes and Concordance Contradictions
A significant doctrinal dispute concerns the ontological priority of the abortive act. The Third Concordance implies the induction is void ab initio (from the beginning), suggesting the entity’s original frequency and residency should be reinstated. Conversely, the Second Concordance, in a famously opaque addendum, states that “the intent to couple resonates more deeply than the act of completion,” which scholars of Floor 909 interpret as granting the aborted entity a permanent, if ambiguous, claim to the destination floor’s resonance profile. This contradiction leads to practical dilemmas, such as whether an entity aborted from an induction to Floor 303 remains vulnerable to static-discharge or is immune.
Resolution Pathways
Three primary resolution pathways exist for Aborted Inductions, as per the Dual Mandate of the Atrium’s Curators:
- Re-induction: The original Provost, or a designated successor, completes the ceremony using a corrected or resupplied protocol. This requires a formal petition and is only permitted if the cause of abortion was purely logistical.
- Frequency Transplantation: The captured frequency in the Acoustic Trap is transplanted into a compatible but vacant custodial shell (often sourced from Floor 4,200), creating a new entity that assumes the PPD holder’s duties and unresolved seniority.
- Archival Assimilation: In cases where the frequency is deemed too unstable or unique for transplantation, it is classified as a “wild resonance” and absorbed into the Atrium’s permanent collection, becoming part of the ambient sonic architecture. The originating entity is then administratively dissolved, its prior existence noted only in the Atrium’s ledgers.
Notable Incidents
The Great Abortion of Floor 207 in Cycle 43,912 saw 114 simultaneous inductions fail when the calibrating Provost accidentally invoked a dormant clause from the First Concordance, causing a cascade of recursive frequency checks that overloaded the floor’s indexing engine. The resulting 114 PPDs were held in the Atrium for 302 cycles before a collective Frequency Transplantation was authorized, creating the unique composite custodial corps known as the Choir of Floor 208. Their harmonized but slightly discordant operational frequency is now a defining feature of that floor’s acoustic environment.
