Discarded Hypotheses
MS 0852.03 · Practices and doctrines
Discarded Hypotheses refers collectively to premises, conjectures, and provisional models that have been formally de-accessioned from the Tower’s active catalogue, consigned to designated receptacles, or left to accrete within specialized zones. Their status is governed by Ordinance 4, Annex C, which delineates the Procedures for the Stabilization of Graded Hypotheses, and the Concordance's provision for Aborted Inductions. While physically inert, Discarded Hypotheses retain a residual structural integrity, often manifesting as tangible phenomena—such as shadows, resonances, or solidified effluvia—in accordance with the Principle of Perpetual Amendment.
Taxonomy and Classification
The Scriptorium maintains a tripartite classification system for Discarded Hypotheses. Type-A hypotheses are those superseded by a more rigorous or elegant formulation; they are typically archived in deep-stack repositories. Type-B hypotheses are those invalidated by contradictory evidence or internal inconsistency; these are often pulped for raw speculative material. Type-C hypotheses, the most volatile, are those abandoned mid-formulation, their incomplete logical structures prone to generating Type-II: Cognitive Effluent and Ambient Regret. The Grey Fields on Sub-level 7-Ξ is a notable Cohered Reality Camp specializing in the suspended animation of Type-C literary character hypotheses.
Depository Zones and Physical Manifestations
Primary containment for Discarded Hypotheses occurs in several designated areas. The Courtyard of Errant Premises on Floor -115 serves as a catchment basin for lightweight, non-adherent conjectures, which gather like autumnal detritus. Heavier, more tenacious hypotheses are directed to the Caldera, described in Annex Γ-4 as a “reservoir for discarded intent.” Here, under Standing Order 881.7, the shadows of lapsed legal clauses from instruments like Concordance 44, Amendment 12 mingle with decommissioned theories, creating stratified layers of lapsed authority.
Auditory manifestations are catalogued at sites like the Canyon of Repeating Whispers, where phrases from de-accessioned archival drafts recite perpetually at a low amplitude. On Floor 308 (the Observatorium of Errant Postulate), specialized equipment measures the faint topological pressure exerted by hypotheses deemed “structurally unsupported but persistently extant.”
Procedural Lifecycle
The journey from active postulate to discarded status follows a strict, if often protracted, bureaucracy. A hypothesis is first marked for review upon receiving three separate notations of “dubious foundation” from Librarians of at least Grade VII. It then enters a 90-day Contemplation Period, during which it may be defended or amended. Failure to achieve reaffirmation triggers the De-accessioning Ritual, detailed in Annex Δ, involving the ceremonial striking of its catalogue sigil and the physical transfer of its documentation to a reflux chute.
Controversially, Ordinance 4, Annex C grants the Scriptorium operational authority to “stabilize” graded hypotheses, a power interpreted by some factions as allowing the proactive discarding of hypotheses deemed politically or epistemologically inconvenient. This has led to the informal category of Type-D: Pre-emptive Discards, a classification not recognized by the Central Index but widely referenced in sub-rosa catalographic discourse.
Scholarly Disputes and the Recrudescence Problem
A persistent scholarly debate concerns the ontological finality of discarding. The Second Concordance posits that a hypothesis, once invalidated and archived, is “extinguished in all but material trace.” However, field reports from Floor 909 and Floor 1117 document instances of “hypothesis recrudescence,” wherein a discarded premise spontaneously regains coherence, infiltrating nearby cataloguing projects. The First Concordance faction argues this is merely cross-contamination from inefficient sorting, while revisionists cite it as evidence for a latent “memory of possibility” inherent in the Tower’s substructure.
This dispute is central to the operational protocols of Floor 303 the Aviary of Static, where certain petrified hypotheses are kept under harmonic restraint to prevent such recurrences. The debate was last formally addressed—but not resolved—in the Addendum to the Third Concordance, Annex 7, Clause (Perpetual Hypotheses).
Utility and Secondary Applications
Discarded Hypotheses are not without utility. Their condensed speculative matter is a key ingredient in the production of Forgotten Resin, used to seal volatile archival gaps. The Grey Fields harvest narrative potential from abandoned character hypotheses for use in procedural world-building exercises. Furthermore, the ambient hum of collective discarded thought is tapped by the Central Index on Floor 0 as a low-grade power source for non-critical annotation engines.
Perhaps the most significant secondary application is pedagogical: novitiates on Floor 207 and Floor 208 are required to perform “salvage audits,” attempting to reconstruct the original intent of a Discarded Hypothesis from its fragmented manifestations. Success is rare, but the process is considered essential for understanding the fragility of catalogued knowledge.
