Speculative Cataloguers

MS 7876.26 · Guilds, orders and offices

Speculative Cataloguers are a designation of personnel authorized by Amendment 3297-Δ to perform cataloguing operations on subjects with a Status Beta or lower verification state. Their mandate is to extrapolate, deduce, and formally record the properties of entities known to be absent, thus preventing taxonomic lacunae from compromising the structural integrity of the Grand Taxonomy.

Speculative Cataloguers are most frequently drawn from the Department of Speculative Biology, though cross-departmental secondments from the Guild of Primary Cataloguers and the Provisional Cataloguers' Guild are not uncommon. They operate under the procedural guidelines established by the Department of Speculative Procedure and their findings are indexed in the Speculative Indices.

Origins and Legal Basis

The creation of the role was a direct response to the crisis of incomplete chains of being identified in the 3290s cataloguing cycle. While the Guild of Primary Cataloguers is responsible for subjects that are demonstrably present, and the Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers handles subjects whose presence is inferred but unverifiable, a procedural gap remained for subjects whose necessity was logically deduced but for which no sensory data, inferred or otherwise, could be marshalled.

…therein shall be established a cadre of Cataloguers of Speculative intent, whose duty is not to find, but to foresee; not to record what is, but what must be, lest the shelves themselves develop paradox-born fractures. (Annex B, Amendment 3297-Δ, Clause 4)

This amendment effectively created a third ontological category for holdings, bridging the work of the Primary and Unseen cataloguers. The philosophical underpinning is most clearly articulated in the Speculative Realism school, which maintains that a sufficiently detailed prediction of a non-existent subject is indistinguishable, for archival purposes, from its discovery.

Standard Operating Procedures

A Speculative Cataloguer's work begins with the identification of a "taxonomic pressure point" within the Grand Taxonomy. For example, a complete phylogenetic tree for airborne silica-based lifeforms might lack a plausible predator. The Cataloguer would then generate a profile for this predator, detailing its morphology, life cycle, and ecological niche based on the constraints of the existing data.

These profiles are drafted according to the Speculative Unification Ordinance (9001.1), which standardizes the format for speculative entries. All entries must include:

  • A reasoned derivation from verified or cross-referenced adjacent holdings.
  • A minimum of three projected interactions with other catalogued subjects.
  • A clearly marked confidence interval, using the official Sigma scale (Σ1–Σ7).

Finished dossiers are submitted for peer assessment, often within the Speculative Realism Wing, before being entered into the provisional ledgers overseen by the Provisional Cataloguers' Guild.

Notable Projects and Holdings

Speculative Cataloguers have been responsible for some of the Tower's most elaborate and internally consistent fictional ecosystems. Notable projects include:

The Speculative Aquaria of Spiral 44
A fully-realized marine biome populated by creatures postulated to consume abstract concepts like "melancholy" or "deferred gratification," developed to fill trophic gaps in the metaphysics wing.
The Speculative Reinforcements for the West Atrium
An ongoing project to architecturally and structurally support wings of the Tower that, while mapped and documented, have never been physically accessed by any expedition.
The Aural Counterparts to the Primary Guild's Chants
A collaborative project with the Acoustic Cataloguers' Guild to notate the hypothesized anti-melodies to the guild's standard cataloguing verses (particularly Verses 13–17), believed to stabilize entries concerning silent phenomena.

Jurisdictional Disputes

The role exists in a constant state of gentle friction with more established cataloguing bodies. The Guild of Primary Cataloguers often questions the empirical rigor of speculative work, while the Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers argues that many "speculative" subjects rightfully fall under their purview as "unseen but implicit."

A persistent and unresolved dispute, cited in multiple Concordance appendices, concerns the cataloguing of tools. The Provisional Cataloguers' Guild maintains that any tool created for the maintenance of a speculative holding (e.g., a harness for grooming a predicted but non-existent beast) must be stored in the Hall of Interim Objects. Speculative Cataloguers, however, contend that such tools are intrinsic data points of the holding itself and cannot be separated from the main entry. This debate often plays out in the peripheral stacks of the Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers, where annex operations are most frequent.

Career Path and Qualifications

Appointment as a Speculative Cataloguer requires certification in Speculative Physiology, advanced taxonomic gap analysis, and a successful defense of an original speculative thesis before a panel comprising members from the Department of Speculative Biology, the Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers, and the Guild of Primary Cataloguers.

Tenure is not permanent. Cataloguers are subject to quadrennial review, wherein a portion of their past predictions are audited against any newly emerged empirical data. A consistent failure rate above 17% (per Concordance 12, Supplement Γ) typically results in reassignment to a counter-cataloguing unit or to the quality assurance division of the Speculative Indices. The role is considered both intellectually prestigious and professionally precarious, a combination that, as one internal report notes, "optimizes for creativity within rigid bureaucratic constraints."
