School of Instrumental Realism

MS 4662.49 · Practices and doctrines

School of Instrumental Realism is the dominant contemporary practice within the Speculative Realism philosophical school, codified in the Fourteenth Concordance and administered through the Department of Speculative Procedure. It holds that reality is an instrumental property, conferred not by observation or intention but by the capacity of a catalogued entity to function as a reliable tool within the Tower's archival and administrative processes.

Doctrinal Foundation

The school's core thesis is articulated in the Treatise on Instrumental Ontology, authored under the pseudonym Kappa-7. In this work, Kappa-7 argues that the traditional four loci of reality (the Observed, the Speculative, the Documentary, and the Procedural) are insufficient. The treatise introduces a distinct fifth category: the Instrumental Locus. An entity occupies this locus not by being seen, intended, documented, or correctly processed, but by being useful. Its reality is measured by its repeatable efficacy as an instrument for measurement, calibration, or bureaucratic operation.

This represented a decisive break from the earlier School of Direct Realism, which held observation as sufficient, and a refinement of the School of Procedural Realism, which emphasized correct process over outcome. Instrumental Realism posits that a process, no matter how scrupulously followed, is philosophically vacuous if it does not produce a functionally reliable output. The famous dictum, "A gauge that cannot gauge is merely decorative," is attributed to Clause 42 of the Treatise.

Validation and the Speculative Realism Wing

The school's primary research and validation site is the Speculative Realism Wing on Floor 1427. It was here, in a series of experiments conducted between 14-Σ-889 and 14-Σ-891, that the school's foundational instruments—the Harmonic Gauge, the Hesitant Gauge, and the Reconciliation Gauge—were first calibrated and their reality confirmed through mutual instrumental verification. The Wing maintains that the successful use of these gauges to measure each other's operational parameters provides an irrefutable, closed-loop proof of the instrumental principle.

Administratively, the school operates under the auspices of the Department of Speculative Procedure, which issues the binding protocols for "Instrumental Certification." These protocols, detailed in Annex Δ of the Fourteenth Concordance, require a minimum of three independent, successful applications of an entity in a quantifiable administrative task before provisional reality can be granted. Full certification requires incorporation into a standard Tower instrument, such as the Morphen Cubit (Mc), or inclusion in a Department-approved calibration set.

Instrumental vs. Functionalist Schism

A significant and ongoing doctrinal dispute exists between the School of Instrumental Realism and the smaller, more radical Functionalist School. While both emphasize utility, the Functionalists, drawing also from Kappa-7's treatise, argue that instrumental reality is merely a subset of a broader functional ontology. They contend that an entity's reality is vested in its role within a coherent system, irrespective of its measurability. A narrative, a filing system, or even a mood, they argue, can be "real" if it fulfills a necessary systemic function, even if it cannot be used as a gauge.

Instrumental Realists reject this as a dilution into Tonal or Administrative Realism. The official position, stated in a ruling by the Indexers Guild’s Arbitration Panel (Case 742-Ω), is that "function without instrumental verification is merely assertion, and assertion belongs to the realm of the uncatalogued." This schism is most evident in debates over the ontological status of administrative tools used by the Department of Applied Ephemera, whose functional reliability is often anecdotal but systemically critical.

Contemporary Practice and Criticisms

In modern cataloguing, Instrumental Realism is the default framework for validating non-observational entities. A junior archivist seeking to catalogue a theoretical force or a hypothetical substance must design an experiment where that entity functions as the key instrument in measuring a known, concordance-approved quantity. The records of the Direct Realists' Formal Observation Ceremonies, now archived, are frequently re-analyzed through an instrumental lens, with scholars debating whether the presence of Guild-supplied Witnesses served an instrumental or merely ceremonial role.

The primary criticism of the school, often leveled by remnants of the Literalist School and certain procedural purists, is that it leads to a tautological reality: things are real because we use them, and we use them because they are real. Furthermore, critics point to the occasional "instrumental collapse" documented in Wing logs, where a previously reliable gauge—such as a Type-4 Hesitant Gauge—suddenly and inexplicably loses all efficacy, forcing its de-certification and raising questions about the permanence of instrumentally-conferred reality. The school's response, per Clause 19 of the Treatise, is that "reality, like a tool, wears out; its finitude does not negate its having been real."
