Vekian School

MS 7943.99 · Practices and doctrines

Vekian School is the collective designation for a lineage of cataloguing theorists and floor-colleges descended from the writings of Theoretician Vek, principally concerned with the proposition that all contexts within the Tower inevitably influence one another and that institutionalized ambiguity is a foundational principle of archival systems. The School maintains permanent scriptoria on floors 113-Δ, 2,901-β, and the disputed spiral annex designated Aperture Vek-7. It is not to be confused with the Vekian Antithesis of Contextual Cohesion, which is the treatise and crisis from which the School takes its name but which the School interprets as a constructive programme rather than a corrective alarm.

Origins and Foundational Texts

The Vekian School was constituted in the winter of 714, two years after Theoretician Vek published the Compendium P-V/2, On the Systemic Antitheses to Contextual Cohesion in Hierarchical Documentation on 17 Obscura, 712. The inaugural recension was signed by nine clerks of the School of Latent Structure, who had been instructed to file the Compendium and instead appended a marginal commentary of 440 leaves. The commentary was later ratified as Ordinance 707, which, per the Committee for Ephemeral Cohesion, "acknowledged the diagnostic utility of the Vekian Antithesis and rejected its prescriptive conclusions" (Clause 3, Sub-annex B).

The School's early curriculum required silent reading of the Vekian Antithesis of Contextual Cohesion for a period not less than nineteen Tower-days, after which the reader was forbidden to summarise it. The prohibition was overturned by the Third Concordance, Annex 4, which held that "a summary withheld is a context unshared, and therefore a decay unrecorded."

Doctrine of Mutual Contextual Influence

Central to the Vekian School is the claim, first advanced in the Vekian Antithesis of Contextual Cohesion, that Contextual Decay is an active 'digestive' process performed by the Tower rather than passive leakage. The School teaches that every holding on every floor participates in a single systemic adjacency, such that the catalogue of Calx School is never fully separable from the School of Particulars. This position placed the Vekian School in sustained dispute with the Foundationalist School, which maintains that certain floors are contextually inert.

"Coherence is a function of systemic adjacency and narrative utility; to isolate a holding is to starve the Tower of its own digestion."

— Compendium P-V/2, On the Systemic Antitheses to Contextual Cohesion in Hierarchical Documentation, Section II

The Sceptical School, established after the formal schism of the Traditionalist School, has contended that the Vekian doctrine merely relabels confusion as metabolism. The Vekians responded in 789 by appending a codicil to the Manual of Contextual Integration (CCI-α), noting that "ambiguity institutionalised is ambiguity made legible" (Cod. Vek-12).

Governance and the Office of the Sub-Annex

The School is administered by the Office of the Sub-Annex, a body whose membership is revised each time a new recension of the Vekian Antithesis of Contextual Cohesion is issued. Clerk Hestin Marr, appointed recorder in 802, filed a grievance against the Office in 815 on the grounds that her corrections to Floor 2,901-β's index had been bound into the wrong spiral. The grievance was settled by citing the Second Concordance, which observed that "errata in one annex are coherence in another."

The Vekian School seceded briefly from the Progressive Cartography School in 744 over a dispute concerning the numbering of unbuilt floors, before rejoining under the Third Concordance's mediation. It retains observer status at the School of Accumulated Intent and contributes quarterly inventories to the Recursive School.

Scholarly Disagreement and Contradiction

A long-standing disagreement divides the Vekian School from the School of Literal Accountability, which holds that the Antithesis describes a failure to be remedied, not a principle to be embraced. The Proceduralist School, which formally seceded from the Literalist School in Year 218, issued a ruling in 760 that the Vekian practice of intentional cross-filing "constitutes a rehearsal of error" (Ordinance 707, Ref. 9). The Vekians cite the same Ordinance as vindication, noting the Committee's acknowledgment of diagnostic utility.

The The Functionalist School and the later Ontological School both influenced early Vekian method before the Ontological School rejected contextual digestion as unmeasurable. Measurements taken on floor 113-Δ in 833 suggested a digestion rate of one context per 4.2 Tower-weeks, but the figure was withdrawn after the School of Instrumental Realism demonstrated the measuring device had been catalogued as a hat.

Present Holdings and Reader Admission

The Vekian School currently holds 11,402 referenced items, including the original Aperture Vek-7 seal and a sealed cistern of condensation from the Unsaid School's western stair. Readers are admitted on the second and fourth Obscura of each year and may not bring quills longer than seven inches, as the Sub-Annex determined in 901 that longer quills "provoke adjacent floors into premature commentary."

The Proleptic School has forecast that the Vekian School will itself become a context digested by a future holding not yet catalogued; the School declined to comment, citing the Vekian Antithesis of Contextual Cohesion's provision that prediction is a species of leakage.
