Proceduralist School

MS 1837.20 · Practices and doctrines

The Proceduralist School is a formal hermeneutic movement within the larger Literalist tradition, primarily concerned with the exact sequence of actions prescribed within ordinances of process. It holds that the validity and efficacy of any administrative, archival, or custodial operation within The Tower are derived not merely from compliance with a stated outcome, but from the scrupulous and unaltered execution of each step as originally codified.

Core Doctrine

The School’s foundational tenet, articulated in its seminal text On the Sequence of Means (Catalogued on Floor Ξ-77), is the Principle of Procedural Immanence: “The authority of an act resides within the order of its doing.” This distinguishes it from related schools. Where the School of Literal Mechanics focuses on the textual integrity of the ordinance itself, and the School of Operational Necessity allows for deviation in pursuit of a functional result, the Proceduralist School argues that each step in a prescribed sequence is a necessary condition for the legitimacy of the whole. Altering, omitting, or transposing steps—even if the final result appears identical—constitutes a fundamental error that voids the action, rendering it “procedurally null.”

Historical Development

The School emerged in the late 4th Spiral as a splinter faction from the School of Literal Adherence, during the contentious debates surrounding the re-shelving protocols for the Annals of Unfixed Geography. While the parent school insisted on the letter of the shelving instruction (“place upon the southernmost shelf of Bay Delta”), the nascent Proceduralists argued that equal weight must be given to the preceding clauses detailing the preparation of the librarian’s hands (“wash three times in consecrated chalk-dust”) and the prescribed path through the stack (“approach via the central aisle, pausing at each intersecting corridor”). Their subsequent victory in the Adjudication of the Chalk-Dust Hands (Case 45..9) established their distinct jurisdiction.

The School later synthesized some principles from the School of Procedural Purists, particularly regarding the inviolability of ceremonial order, though it rejects the Purists’ more extreme ascetic constraints on the physical actors involved. A significant internal schism occurred in the 7th Spiral, giving rise to the School of Applied Paradox, which challenged the Proceduralists’ assumption of a coherent, non-contradictory sequence inherent in all ordinances.

Methodology and Practice

Proceduralist analysis begins with the decomposition of an ordinance into its constituent “moves,” each of which is assigned a tier (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary) based on its position and connective language (e.g., “whereupon,” “following this,” “not before”). Practitioners then create flow-diagrams, known as Sequential Labyrinths, which map every possible branching path implied by conditional clauses. A famous example is the Labyrinth for the “Protocol of Unspoken Acquisitions” (Fourth Concordance, Annex Ω), which occupies an entire wall of their chapter-house on Floor 10,001.

Their work is most frequently invoked in disputes over archival accession, stack reorganization, and the authentication of expedition logs, where the precise order of witness-signatures, item cataloging, and notarization is often contested. The School maintains a registry of “Certified Sequences” for over twelve thousand common Tower operations.

Notable Controversies

The School’s rigid adherence has led to several celebrated disputes. The most protracted was the “Contest of the Redundant Gate,” wherein the Axiomatic School challenged the Proceduralist reading of a door-opening ritual that contained two identical “turn the key” steps in sequence. The Proceduralists insisted both turns were distinct and necessary Primary moves; the Axiomats argued the second was a redundant derivative, expendable without loss of efficacy. The Lateralist School’s ruling ultimately favored the Proceduralists, but mandated the creation of a new sub-category for “Echo Moves.”

Ongoing tension exists with the Intentionalist School, which dismisses Sequential Labyrinths as “fetishism of the incidental,” and the School of Operational Necessity, which views Proceduralist doctrine as a primary source of bureaucratic paralysis. The Proceduralists, in turn, critique these schools for introducing what they term “interpretive drift,” whereby the core stability of Tower operations is gradually eroded.

Contemporary Influence

Today, the School holds considerable sway over the Custodial Corps and the clerks of the Registry of Motions. While their influence has waned in more speculative fields like Predictive Curation or Latent Structure, they remain the undisputed authority on the execution of foundational, repetitive Tower functions. Their manuals are standard issue for all neophyte librarians during their probationary period on the Lower Stairwells. The current Dean of Sequences is Hierophant Kaelen, who oversees the School from its administrative node on Aperture Σ.
