Gallery of Literal Portraits

MS 0867.86 · Places and structures

Gallery of Literal Portraits is the operational designation for the eastern annex of Floor 2001, formally established under Amendment 47 to the Seventh Concordance. It is a curated repository dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of portraits whose subjects are defined exclusively by their literal, documented physical presence at the moment of depiction, as per the codified principles of the School of Literal Adherence. The Gallery’s establishment in Year 842 of the Tower’s recorded chronology followed the resolution of the Western Atmospheric Spiral calibration crisis, a dispute between the School of Literal Mechanics and proceduralist factions concerning the tolerances for “artistic interpretation” in archival portraiture1. The Gallery serves as both a museum of precedent and an active workshop for portraitists working under literalist mandates.

Curatorial Principles

The Gallery’s core doctrine is articulated in its founding charter, Clause 2001-E.3: "A Literal Portrait is a record of quantifiable fact, not of essence, emotion, or implication." This necessitates a rigorous process. Prior to any brushstroke, the subject must be registered with the Chamber of Verification on Floor 2001, which issues a docket listing all verifiable attributes: height (to the nearest millimetre), prevailing ambient light frequency, precise spatial coordinates within the Tower, and a catalogue of visible garments or features. The portraitist is contractually bound to this docket.

Deviations, such as the inclusion of a shadow where the light-source log indicates none, or the omission of a documented smudge on the subject’s left cuff, render a portrait “Non-Literal” and subject to transfer to the Gallery of Partial Weaves or, in severe cases, the Gallery of Unenacted Laws.

Notable Holdings

The Gallery’s collection is organized by taxonomic attribute rather than aesthetic merit. Notable wings include:

  • The Aisle of Standardized Gestures: Contains 1,847 portraits of subjects holding Certification Orb #7 (a grey sphere of fixed diameter), demonstrating uniform hand placement.
  • The Hall of Verified Dim Light: Houses portraits executed under illumination of precisely 15 lumens, resulting in canvases that appear largely black to the casual observer. Scholastic debate surrounds Portrait #4072, which some argue may in fact be a primer coat awaiting the subject2.
  • The Corridor of Transient Anomalies: Features portraits where a literal, documented anomaly (e.g., a fly in mid-flight across the subject’s brow, a falling mote of dust) is the central focus, often obscuring the subject’s face entirely.

A significant cross-reference collection details portraits of subjects who were, at the moment of sitting, themselves engaged in creating literal portraits. This meta-catalogue is indefinitely recursive.

The Dispute of the Unfinished Referent

The Gallery’s most persistent administrative challenge involves its relationship with The Gallery of Unfinished Portraits. A strict reading of Clause 2001-E.3 suggests that a portrait of an unidentified subject cannot be literal, as key attributes cannot be verified. However, a 9th Helical Ruling (Concordance Addendum Ξ-12) argued that the act of sitting is itself a verifiable attribute, and thus a portrait of an unknown sitter can be literal if it documents only the act of being painted.

This ruling created a category of “Procedurally Literal” works. The Vault of Unfinished Business on Floor 11,507 now contains several portraits initially claimed by the Gallery of Literal Portraits, their status pending a full review by the School of Literal Accountability. This dispute is a primary reason for the monthly liaison meetings between the curators of Floor 2001 and Floor 11,507.

Operational Linkages

The Gallery does not operate in isolation. It maintains a formal exchange of errata with the Gallery of Unseen Portraits on Floor 407, as both deal with the limitations of observational fact. Furthermore, its archivists are required to consult the Wandering Index of Floor 1,114-Δ biannually to ensure no subject’s literal status has been retrospectively invalidated by upstream cataloguing errors.

Production of new Literal Portraits has declined in recent centuries, largely due to the extensive docketing requirements and the rising influence of the Proceduralist School, which splintered from the School of Literal Adherence over the issue of whether a subject’s intent could be considered a verifiable attribute. The Gallery’s current role is increasingly that of a historical archive, preserving the pinnacle of literalist practice as defined in the seminal text On Literal Compliance.
