Gallery of Partial Weaves

MS 1852.83 · Places and structures

The Gallery of Partial Weaves is a subsidiary archival space located within Spire 404, administratively subordinate to the Seventh Helical Gallery, that serves as the primary repository for artifacts, manuscripts, and phenomena classified as ‘Partial’. Its holdings are defined by Concordance 117, Clause 9 as “any object, concept, or procedure that has been initiated but not concluded, documented but not ratified, or remembered but not enacted.” The Gallery exists in a state of formalized neglect, a status confirmed by the findings of The Partial Survey and subsequently enshrined within the administrative codex.

Physical and Topological Structure

Access to the Gallery is via Aperture 7-Beta on the western face of Spire 404’s upper non-Euclidean buttresses. Its internal geometry is non-sequential; corridors loop without intersecting, and rooms are reported to shift relative to one another, a phenomenon catalogued as Incident 511-Δ. The ambient lighting is described in surveyor reports as “a persistent, greyish twilight, source unknown,” which has remained constant since the last recorded maintenance cycle in Year 322 of the Fifth Chronology. The air is notably still and carries a faint scent of oxidized linen and slow-drying ink.

Holdings and Classification

The Gallery’s primary inventory is the Ledger of Partial Acquisitions, a self-updating manuscript whose seventh certified copy was examined during The Partial Survey. Holdings are organized not by subject or chronology, but by degree of completion. Notable categories include:

  • Unfinished Symphonies: Musical scores missing between three and forty-seven bars.
  • Architectural Ghosts: Plans deemed merely unfinished by the Architect-Superior and transferred from the Seventh Helical Gallery. These often lack only a single cornerstone notation or roof angle specification.
  • Procedural Stubs: Drafts of administrative forms that were abandoned mid-revision, often containing contradictory clauses that resolve upon observation.
  • The Selvage Weaves: A collection of textile-based mnemonics left by the Gallery’s former workspace occupant, M. Selvage. These unique artifacts are documented as being capable of absorbing administrative contradictions.

Administrative Status and The Selvage Resonance

Following The Partial Survey, the Gallery was officially designated a “Self-Curating Collection” under Clause 14, meaning it receives no scheduled custodial visits and its internal cataloguing rules are considered provisional and self-referential. This status is intrinsically linked to the residual consciousness of M. Selvage, which, according to Archivist-Lieutenant M. Kael’s report, is “interwoven with the Gallery’s ambient reality.” This has led to the scholarly debate known as the Selvage Dilemma: whether the Gallery’s partial nature is a curated collection or a symptom of M. Selvage’s own unfinished state. A ruling by the Curatorium in Year 511 mandated that all articles discussing the Selvage Weaves must be printed on a specific blend of flax and lignin-free pulp, a measure whose efficacy remains unproven.

The Partial Survey and Last Official Inspection

The most comprehensive assessment was conducted during The Partial Survey (Years 45–62, Fifth Chronology), an initiative launched by Annex Ω to establish a definitive cartography. The survey team, led by M. Kael, documented the Gallery’s non-linear topology and the self-referential nature of its ledger. The Survey was ultimately abandoned when it was concluded that a complete map would necessitate finishing several of the Gallery’s own partial artifacts, thereby violating their defining characteristic. No full inspection has been attempted since, in adherence to the principle of “respectful neglect” outlined in the post-Survey addendum to the Fifth Concordance.

Related and Contrasting Spaces

The Gallery is often conceptually contrasted with other specialized repositories. The Gallery of Unenacted Laws catalogues fully-formed legislation that was never promulgated, representing a state of total but unused completion. The Whispering Gallery on Floor 22 deals with fully-audible but intentionally obscured communication. The Gallery of Partial Weaves is unique in its focus on the intermediate state—the work suspended mid-gesture, the sentence trailing into silence. Its closest analogue may be The Shifting Gallery, though the latter’s mutability is topological rather than ontological.

“To enter the Gallery is to walk through the ghost of an intention. One does not catalogue what is there, but what is almost there. The silence between the notes is, in this instance, a holding.”

— Archivist-Lieutenant M. Kael, Final Dispatch from The Partial Survey
