Floor 1121

MS 0258.23 · Places and structures

Floor 1121, designated administratively as the Solipsist Stacks, is a mid-registry floor principally devoted to the cataloguing of phenomena and artifacts whose existence is contingent upon the observation of a specific, singular librarian. Its location is recorded as being between Floor 881 and Floor 1117, though it possesses no direct physical connections to either, accessible only via the Seventh Concordance's Protocol of Unobserved Transit.

Architectural Anomalies

The floor’s physical layout is non-Euclidean and subject to the Principle of Perceptual Collapse. Corridors reconfigure themselves to remain just out of the direct line of sight of any observer; a shelf may contain several thousand volumes when viewed peripherally, but upon direct inspection, it will be found to hold only a single, mundane ledger. The central cataloguing desk, known as the Nexus of Assumption, is the only stable architectural feature, though its contents—inkwells, stamps, reading lenses—vanish if a clerk attempts to use them, reappearing only when their need is no longer actively considered.

Cataloguing Methodology

Holdings on Floor 1121 are not assigned standard shelf-marks. Instead, they are indexed under a complex system of provisional designations, primarily the Perdurant-Transient (P-T) code. A typical entry might read: "P-T/1121.45.δ: 'The Sigh of Clerk Aris, Unheard' — Viable only during the westward light of Floor 881's false dusk; catalogued by Junior Librarian Finn, now on sabbatical." The act of formally recording an item often destabilizes it, leading to the infamous Third Concordance injunction against "the folly of definitive notation in zones of contested reality."

Administrative Status and Jurisdictional Disputes

Floor 1121 exists in a perpetual state of administrative limbo. The Librarians have never issued a Concordance that directly governs it, as any such document would, by its nature, require observation and thus alter the floor's state. Instead, it is managed through a cascade of delegated non-observation: senior staff on Floor 2001 are instructed to assume its continued operation without audit, while junior clerks on adjacent floors like Floor 1117 are directed to route any related queries into a filing cabinet designated "For Inadvertent Attention Only."

A protracted dispute exists between the registrars of Floor 712 (Chronological Anomalies) and Floor 451 (Intentional Fictions) over which department holds ultimate provenance for the Solipsist Stacks' contents. The former argues that the items are historical events that failed to achieve consensus; the latter contends they are fictions so potent they briefly convinced a single mind. This dispute is considered a primary source of the faint, discordant humming reported in the inter-floor stairwells between Floor 412 and Floor 881.

Notable Incidents

The Vanishing of Clerk Morven (Cycle 7,124)
Clerk Morven, assigned to conduct a routine inventory, reportedly became so convinced of the non-existence of a subsection of the Ephemera collection that the subsection, and subsequently Morven herself, ceased to be an observable phenomenon for all other personnel. She is now listed in the duty rosters of Floor 19 under a "Presumption of Continued Function."
The Transitory Concordance (Undated)
A single parchment, discovered pinned to the Nexus of Assumption with a cork-tipped needle, outlined seventeen statutes for the "Governance of the Subjectively Real." By the time a transcription team from Floor 2001 arrived, the parchment had faded to a watermark stating only "Article II: Don't." This document is sometimes cited in jurisdictional hearings, though its legal standing is contested.

Research Protocols

Access to Floor 1121 is theoretically open to any accredited researcher, provided they first submit Form 1121-α ("Declaration of Intent Not To Observe Directly"). Approved research must be conducted using peripheral vision, mirrored instruments, or via auditory description from a blindfolded assistant. All findings are to be filed under "Provisional Data" in the archives of Floor 1024, which specializes in recursive and meta-catalogical systems. Notably, several promising theses on the nature of the floor have themselves become holdings within it, creating a closed ontological loop that is the subject of ongoing, if deliberately indirect, study.
