Transitory Galleries

MS 4101.43 · Practices and doctrines

Transitory Galleries are a class of provisional reading and shelving spaces administered under the authority of the Registry of Transitory Holdings, distinguished from permanent floors by their dependence upon Ephemeral Staircases and their susceptibility to Transitory Luminance (TL). They are formally recognised as holdings of the Tower despite possessing no fixed vertical coordinate, and are referenced in the Compendium of Transitory Holdings as "rooms which are not, yet are catalogued."

Establishment and Jurisdiction

The first Transitory Gallery was recorded on the eve of the Third Recension (Year 881 of the Lower Scriptoria), when Clerk Ormel of Wing Seven observed a chamber adjoining Floor 1442 the Anechoic Galleries that had not appeared on the prior day's elevation. By ruling of Concordance 742, such spaces were thenceforth to be entered in the Registry of Transitory Holdings within six hours of manifestation. The Registry granted temporary shelf-rights pursuant to Transient Credentials, a practice later disputed by the office of the Anechoic Galleries, which held that any gallery intersecting its domain fell under the Whispering Galleries Provisional Annex. The dispute was settled by Correlation 9099-γ, which declared the Transitory Galleries "simultaneously subordinate and adjacent, as the geometry requires."

Physical Character and Anomalies

Transitory Galleries are characteristically lit by Transitory Luminance (TL), as no permanently installed illuminatory apparatus has ever been sanctioned for them. Measurements taken during the Winter Survey of Year 934 recorded a mean luminous output of 0.4 candela, fluctuating with the proximity of Tension Rings. The Catalog of Transitory Echoes notes that Spiral Q retains the master registry for all acoustic events occurring within these galleries, and that the most significant holding thereof is the record of a single footstep repeated thirteen times without a walker. Primary attenuation of such echoes is conducted in the Attenuation Galleries, with cultivation support from the Fungus-Garden Galleries, per the standing arrangement described in Ongoing Monitoring of the Attenuation Galleries.

"No gallery transitory in nature shall be entered with a lit taper exceeding four inches, lest the luminance be mistaken for a permanent installation."

— Concordance 742, Annex 3, Clause 11

Scholarly Disagreement on Permanence

A long-standing contradiction obtains between Concordance 742 and the Third Concordance regarding whether a Transitory Gallery that persists beyond one full Tower-year becomes permanent by accretion. Concordance 742 asserts that duration confers no status, citing the case of the gallery encountered by the expedition to Vellum Galleries in Year 1002, which remained accessible for fourteen months and was then withdrawn without notice. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, holds contrarily that "continued catalogue entry for four hundred days constitutes sanction." The Registry of Transitory Holdings has issued no resolution, and clerks are instructed to record both positions in the margin.

Incidents and Notable Findings

In Year 997, a relocation of the Class C holdings through the Ephemeral Cartography wing caused three Transitory Galleries to fuse briefly with the Dim Galleries, where Archival Shadows were most commonly observed thereafter for a period of nine weeks. The Right to Ephemeral Annotation was invoked to document the event, though the originating clerk, Pensel of the Lower Scriptoria, later filed a grievance that his annotations had been shelved under Gtmgedelta in error. Separate findings entered the Anechoic Reliquary after a gallery near the Anechoic Galleries produced a silence measurable at 61 decibels below threshold, recorded in the Catalog of Transitory Echoes, Spiral Q.

Visitors are reminded that secondary access to the Vellum Galleries via the Fungus-Garden Galleries does not constitute a route to any Transitory Gallery, and that personnel arriving from the Dim Galleries must complete the six-month adaptation regimen in the Fungus-Garden Galleries before handling transitory shelf-rights.

Administrative Appendices

The Compendium of Transitory Holdings contains Plate LXII, illustrating shelving arrangements on Floor 1121, which the Registry cites as the nearest stable analogue to Transitory Gallery layout. Annex VII was originally a dedicated ledger for items in a state of transit and remains the authoritative source for objects removed from these galleries. The Crisis of the Receding Galleries is noted in marginalia as a cautionary parallel, though no formal linkage has been ratified by the Librarians.
