Transitory Workroom Gamma-7

MS 1612.39 · Places and structures

Transitory Workroom Gamma-7 is a provisional workroom of the Registry of Transitory Holdings, constituted under Ordinance Gamma-7, Section 12(b) and administered in ordinary course from the Wing Seven scriptorium. Unlike the general run of Transitory Galleries, which exist chiefly to shelve and read, Workroom Gamma-7 is a space of production: copying, collation, seal-impression, and the repair of damaged bindings. It is not a room anywhere in particular. It is entered by the same means as other transitory architecture, and it is remembered by almost no one who has used it.

Constitution and Situation

The workroom's instruments of constitution are unusually complete. Ordinance 745-Δ assigns it a bench count (eleven, of which nine are ordinarily serviceable), and Clause 18.7 of the same instrument establishes its relation to the Right to Ephemeral Annotation, permitting workers within the workroom to annotate ephemeral surfaces without registering the annotation against a permanent floor. This right is what makes the workroom useful: a copyist may correct a page in a gallery that will not exist tomorrow without any of the corrections surviving it, which the Registry considers a desirable economy.

Access is by Ephemeral Staircases, and the workroom inherits the lighting characteristic of all such spaces — Transitory Luminance, at a mean of 0.4 candela, which the Protocol Gamma-12 permits on the reasoning that the workroom's collating tables are low and need only be seen from above. Copyists report that this is adequate. The Registry has never commissioned a study to confirm it.

Registry Status and the Six-Hour Rule

Concordance 742 requires that Transitory Galleries be entered in the Registry within six hours of manifestation, and states plainly that duration confers no permanence status. Workroom Gamma-7 is entered under this provision by a standing clerk's hand, since the workroom manifests or fails to manifest more or less continuously and the six hours are calculated, by long habit, from the moment the first bench is observed to be weight-bearing.

The distinction matters at the margins. In the winter of the year recorded as 1147 in the Registry's own count, Spiral76-Gamma was formally mistaken for the workroom's east alcove for a period of nine days, during which three hundred and twelve leaves were annotated against the wrong locus and an entire collation of the Compendium of Transitory Holdings was conducted in a space that had no standing to receive it. The error was discovered when a sealer's press, set down for a moment on Floor 1121, was never recovered. The Incident at Spiral 899-Gamma remains the standard citation in disputes over this class of confusion.

Dispute: The Permanence Question

The workroom has been the occasion of the longest-running disagreement between the Registry of Transitory Holdings and the Committee on Standing Structures, and the disagreement turns on a single clause. Ordinance Gamma-7, Section 12(b) refers to the workroom in passing as "the standing workroom of the Gamma series," a phrase the Committee reads as establishing permanence and the Registry reads as a scribal error carried forward from the recension of 1102. The Registry's position is set out under seal in its comment on the Catalog of Transitory Echoes, where the workroom is listed among spaces "which are not, yet are catalogued."

"A word repeated in an annex does not build a wall. The workroom has been taken down and carried up eleven times in living memory and no one has yet complained of the draught."

— Concordance 742, Annex C

The Committee has not withdrawn its reading. Practically, the matter resolves in the Registry's favour wherever an inspector arrives, because the workroom cannot be found on a Tuesday.

Acoustic Record and a Known Irregularity

Workroom Gamma-7 appears twice in the master registry held at Spiral Q as the locus of an acoustic event. The principal entry is the standard finding recorded in the Catalog of Transitory Echoes: a single footstep repeated thirteen times without a walker. The workroom returns the phenomenon more often than any other transitory space, at a rate of roughly one occurrence in forty working shifts. Copyists are instructed to continue working through it.

The second entry, recorded on Witness Ledger 44-Gamma and still uncollated, describes a sound of ruling and re-ruling, as of a sheet being squared repeatedly, heard from a bench that was not occupied.

Working Conditions

Rules of use are few and are posted at the head of the stair. Ink is not to be carried up the Ephemeral Staircases; it is issued at the bench and surrendered at the bench, on the ground that a spilled bottle has never once been recovered from a space that declined to manifest the following morning. Sand is provided for the same reason. Workers are asked not to leave outdoor coats on the hooks.

Ink consumption at the eleven benches is recorded each shift by the Transient Credentials clerk assigned to Wing Seven, and the ledger of these returns is the only continuous record of the workroom's existence. It has not missed a day since 1104. The workroom itself has missed a great many.
