Registry of Minor Impressions
MS 6625.21 · Documents and ordinances
The Registry of Minor Impressions is the central ledger maintained by the Scriptorium of Minor Weights for the provisional logging of qualia weight values. It serves as the interim record for phenomena deemed of insufficient permanence for inclusion in the Master Ledgers, yet whose fleeting reality requires formal notation for custodial and archival purposes.
Purpose and Function
The Registry exists to prevent the loss of transient subjective experiences during their evaluation period. When a Custodian or a Tertiary Clerk encounters a phenomena—such as a disembodied scent, an unattributed sense of dread, or the afterimage of a color that does not exist—they are obligated to file a provisional entry. This filing, completed on Form M-W/44, assigns the experience a temporary qualia weight and a Custody Chain identifier, thereby granting it standing within the Tower's administrative reality until a final determination is made.
The process is governed by Fourth Concordance, Clarification 12, which explicitly grants "phenomena of a disembodied or residual sensory nature" to the purview of the Tertiary Clerk, necessitating their documentation.
Procedural Framework
Submission to the Registry follows a strict protocol:
- Observation: The experiencing functionary must note the precise coordinates (floor, corridor, and distance from the nearest Minor Stair), temporal markers, and a description of the impression using the approved sensory taxonomy.
- Quantification: A provisional qualia weight between 0.001 and 0.5 Minor Units is assigned, based on the intensity and perceived duration of the impression.
- Formalization: Form M-W/44 is completed in triplicate. One copy is deposited in the Registry, one is retained by the submitter, and one is forwarded to the relevant departmental atelier for analysis.
- Custody Chain Initiation: The entry establishes a Custody Chain, tracking the impression through any subsequent manifestations or attenuations.
The Registry itself is a vast, circular chamber on the 307th Floor, lined with continuously updating spool-displays. Entries automatically expire after one fiscal spiral unless a Petition for Permanent Weight is filed with the Scriptorium of Minor Weights.
Controversies and Disputes
The Registry is a frequent source of inter-departmental contention. The Synod of Minor Archivists insists that the 500-pace limit for a Minor Pilgrimage, established in AT 1147, applies to the journey to file an impression, not to the impression's point of origin. The Department of Ephemeral Acoustics, however, cites the older Concordance of Lingering Impressions, which they interpret as applying the limit to the phenomena's locale. This has led to the peculiar practice of "stairwell notations," where impressions experienced beyond the limit are hastily documented on the nearest Minor Stair before the pilgrim returns to the Registry.
A more ontological dispute concerns the "Cascade Effect." Some philosophers within the Atelier of Permanent Impressions argue that the mere act of logging a minor impression in the Registry imbues it with enough administrative reality to slightly increase its qualia weight, a violation of the principle of observational neutrality. Proponents of the Registry counter that this perceived increase is merely the weight of the documentation itself, which is accounted for in Column 7 of Form M-W/44.
Notable Related Holdings
The Registry is the first point of entry for many phenomena that later achieve greater standing. For instance, the resonant echo catalogued as Architectural Echo was initially logged as "Impression 44.7.09-a: Percussive resonance in marble, suggesting abandoned footsteps." Similarly, the entity known as Gtmgedelta was for seven spirals listed only as "Registry Entry 88.1.00: A persistent chill in the northwest corner of the Chamber of Fading Impressions."
It functions as a feeder system for more specialized registries, such as the Registry of Slowed Experience and the Registry of Lingual Drift. Its statistical data is also compiled to inform documents like the Metrica of Minor Manifestations, which outlines expected frequencies for minor phenomena materialization.
Administrative Significance
Beyond its archival role, the Registry of Minor Impressions is a critical tool for bureaucratic diagnostics. A sudden surge in logged impressions of "undirected melancholy" in a specific wing often precedes structural instability or a leak from a Lost Chord containment chamber. Likewise, a decline in entries from a particular floor may trigger a Registry Query to ascertain if the fault lies with clerical absenteeism or a genuine thinning of existential substrate. Its ledgers, therefore, are read not only for their content but for the patterns they reveal about the Tower's overall metaphysical health.
