Floor 3127

MS 4935.71 · Places and structures

Floor 3127 is a transit-and-revision floor of the Tower, situated between Floor 300 and Floor 4001, and administered under the overlapping jurisdictions of the Office of Lateral Recension and the Wardens of the North Aperture. It is notable principally for the Treatise of Seven Misplacements, compiled there in the 884th recension cycle, and for the long-running dispute concerning whether its eastern stair is technically part of Floor 312 or merely adjacent to it.

Location and Physical Description

Floor 3127 is reached from Floor 300 by the south descent and from Floor 4001 by the helical ascent marked Spiral δ. The floor occupies a single oblong gallery 312 ells in length, interrupted at the midpoint by the Column of Unattributed Margins, a load-bearing structure upon which clerks are forbidden to lean. According to the Second Concordance, Annex 9, the floor "shall be held to lie between the calibration of Floor 300 and the procedural reserves of Floor 4001, notwithstanding any intervening enumeration." The Fifth Concordance, by contrast, places Floor 3127 "at such distance from Floor 288 as the Office of Lateral Recension shall from time to time determine," a contradiction that has never been formally amended.

Administrative History

The earliest catalogued presence on Floor 3127 dates to the 411th recension cycle, when Clerk Hovil of the Long Margin was assigned to "receive items returned from floors not yet visited." Hovil's tenure ended in the 447th cycle amid the Dispute of the Reversed Inventory, in which he recorded 1,204 holdings as residing on Floor 1121 when they had in fact been shelved on Floor 3127; the error was not discovered until the Verification of Floor 1,207 passed through the gallery nineteen cycles later. Hovil's grievance, preserved in the Scriptorium of Minor Complaints, reads in part:

"I was instructed to file by destination, not by presence, and the destination was written in a hand I do not possess."

— Clerk Hovil of the Long Margin, Petition to the Third Concordance

The Wardens of the North Aperture assumed custody of the eastern stair in the 612th cycle, following the Ruling of the Adjacent Step, which held that "a stair belonging to no floor is the charge of whichever office first notices the omission."

Holdings and the Treatise of Seven Misplacements

The principal holding of Floor 3127 is the Treatise of Seven Misplacements, a bound recension of corrections to floors erroneously catalogued as non-adjacent. The treatise names, among others, the misplacement of Floor 707 relative to Floor 704, and the confusion of Floor 881 with the approach to Floor 909. A supplementary inventory, maintained without official sanction, lists the following items as "present but unclaimed":

Visitors are prohibited from removing the numbering-stone, as established by the Ordinance of Static Numerals, Clause 3.

Scholarly Disagreement

The status of the eastern stair remains contested. The Second Concordance holds that "all stairs descending from Floor 3127 are of Floor 3127." The Fifth Concordance, Annex 12, asserts that "the stair to Floor 312 is of Floor 312 in all particulars save its topmost step, which is of the floor above." Theodor of the Annex, in his Recension of Contiguous Error, argues that the contradiction was resolved by the Ruling of the Adjacent Step and that further debate "constitutes a filing error rather than a philosophical one." The Office of Lateral Recension has declined to issue a verdict, citing the First Concordance's prohibition on rulings "while the ink of the question remains wet."

Maintenance and Access

Floor 3127 is open to certified readers during the hours between the second and seventh bell of the deep watch. The Wardens of the North Aperture require that all visitors deposit a single unsharpened stylus at the threshold, to be returned upon exit; the practice derives from the Incident of the Marginal Scratch of the 790th cycle. The floor's lighting is supplied by the Guild of Slow Lanterns, whose charter obliges them to replace any lantern that has burned for more than four hundred days.
