Aperture 113-Gamma

MS 7670.87 · Places and structures

Aperture 113-Gamma is a fixed vertical opening within Spiral 117, Aperture Gamma, administered as a dependency of Aperture Gamma under the provisions of the Fourth Concordance, Recension 12. First surveyed in the 884th archival winter, it is distinguished from neighbouring apertures by its refusal to admit measuring cords beyond a depth of 3.1 metres, a property documented in the log of the Surveying Party of Aperture Gamma and later formalised as a calibration exception in The Perpetual Requisition of Aperture Gamma.

Geographical Placement

Aperture 113-Gamma is situated on the eastern lip of Spiral 117, Aperture Gamma, approximately forty paces from the Central Aperture designated Aperture Epsilon on that spiral. Unlike Aperture 12-Gamma, whose plinth stones were found by a surveying party from Aperture Gamma to emit a resonant frequency, the rim of Aperture 113-Gamma is composed of close-fitted basalt blocks bearing the incised seal of the Office of Sub-Audible Registries. The Lys-Gamma Spiral is reachable from the aperture only by the descent marked at Aperture Gamma-7, though couriers occasionally mistake the two entrances during the fog months and must be returned by the Clerks of the Receiving Bay Gamma.

Administrative History

The earliest extant reference to Aperture 113-Gamma appears in a marginal note of the Third Concordance, which records that "no cord lowered into 113-Gamma shall be counted against the quarterly inventory of Spiral76-Gamma" (Third Concordance, Annex 9). This clause was revoked by the Fifth Concordance in its 11th amendment, then partially restored by the Sixth Concordance under a contradictory reading later criticised by the Scriptorium of Spiral 44-Gamma aperture. The dispute was settled, in practice rather than in writing, when the Librarians sealed the relevant folio and assigned it to the care of Thelonius V, who has never permitted its recension.

In the 902nd winter, a requisition error caused Aperture 113-Gamma to be listed as a sub-branch of Aperture 77-Gamma, an error corrected only after the Sub-Audible Hum at Aperture 77-Gamma was found not to propagate through its neighbour's rim. The Perpetual Siphon of Aperture 12-Gamma was briefly suspected of drawing air from 113-Gamma, but the Gamma Aperture Incident inquiry cleared both sites of mutual interference.

Physical Anomalies

Aperture 113-Gamma does not echo. Sounds introduced into the opening cease at the 3.1-metre cord limit and are not returned, a fact established by the Acoustic Commission of Spiral 7 Aperture Gamma in its 77th session. The Gamma-Delta Intersection Event of '73 produced no measurable effect upon the aperture, though the Office of Sub-Audible Registries entered a dissent noting that its instruments had been withdrawn for repair.

"The absence of return at 113-Gamma is to be logged as a presence of non-return, and not as silence."

— Directive 88-Gamma-7, Clause 4

Visiting clerks are advised that objects dropped into the aperture become catalogued as residing at Aperture 113-Gamma and may not be retrieved by the same hand that dropped them; a second clerk must perform the recovery, and only on the third archival day following.

Scholarly Disagreement

A long-standing contradiction concerns whether Aperture 113-Gamma is the archetypal counterpart to Aperture 112-W, as asserted of the broader Aperture Gamma body in the Second Concordance. The Scriptorium of Spiral 44-Gamma aperture holds that 113-Gamma is too shallow to bear such a relation, while the Office of Sub-Audible Registries cites the shared basalt nomenclature as conclusive. The Librarians have issued no ruling, on the ground that the question "pertains to a classification not yet opened" (Fourth Concordance, Recension 12, Scholion 3).
