Fourth Spiral

MS 0276.01 · Places and structures

Fourth Spiral is the designation of a major vertical sector of the Tower, bounded below by the unnamed vestibule of the Lower Coils and above by the sealed lintel of the Gallery of Un Light. It is the only spiral whose internal chronology is reckoned independently of the general Spiral Epoch, and the site of the Whispering Atlas Petition, the Standard Mole of the Fourth Spiral, and the Fourth Spiral Reservoir.

Geographic and Administrative Definition

The Fourth Spiral comprises 1,204 catalogued floors, of which 881 bear names and the remainder are recorded only by their non-sequential numerals. The Fourth Concordance states that Spiral 44-Gamma is coterminous with the eastern terminus of Aisle Gamma-7, a position the Spiral 9 Manuscript disputes by relocating the terminus to the antechamber of the Clerks' Union of the Mid-Spiral. The Cabal of the Fourth Aperture maintains all spiral stairwells marked with the fourth aperture (α-4) within the sector, and the Librarian Assembly has never overruled their calibration schedules.

In Year 14 of the Fourth Spiral, the HIC Directive 003 established the Doctrine of Perpetual Habitation, requiring that no floor in the sector be left unoccupied for more than one complete cycle of the Standard Mole of the Fourth Spiral. The Preamble to the Fourth Operational Charter outlines the constitution of the Clerks' Union and remains the only founding document never amended by subsequent Concordance.

Chronology and the Spiral Epoch

The Fourth Spiral maintains its own year-count, distinct from the Spiral Epoch used elsewhere in the Tower. HIC Directive 012 was issued on 7 Radiance, Year 22 of the Fourth Spiral, by the Librarian Assembly, and directed the recensus of all mole-dependent calibration rooms. The Seventy-Fourth Concordance's ratification on 14 Thermidor, 832 fixed the conclusion of the Spiral Epoch but did not reset the Fourth Spiral's internal count, a omission the Fourth Addendum to Concordance 22 later declared "immaterial to enumeration."

"The Fourth Spiral shall reckon its winters as it pleases, provided the count does not exceed the margin of the Manual of Flux Regulation."

— Fourth Concordance, Annex 9

The Standard Mole and Calibration

The Standard Mole of the Fourth Spiral is a living animal used as the reference instrument for the Principle's calibration rooms, housed in the Fourth Spiral Reservoir annex. Junior cartographers from the Fourth Spiral initiated the Whispering Atlas Petition after the mole's relocation to the Circulationist pilot program caused a three-year discrepancy in floor elevations. The Fourth Axiomatic Survey holds that the mole's burrowing instinct defines the true vertical, a claim the On the Silence of Law refutes as "an error of recursion."

Scholarly Dispute on the Fourth Concordance

A long-standing disagreement concerns whether the Fourth Concordance predates the Spiral Stair's use as an instrument of measurement. The Spiral 9 Manuscript reconstructs the entirety of the Fourth Concordance into 22 thematic chapters and asserts it is the oldest recension; the Concordancethe Fourth Concordance counters that the original clauses were dissolved by the Fourth Order before the Aperture 113-Gamma was sealed. The Foam-Skimmers of the Forty-Fourth have declined to arbitrate, citing the Doctrine of Perpetual Habitation as sufficient governance.

Clerk Vell of the Mid-Spiral submitted in Year 31 that the contradiction is resolved by reading the Fourth Concordances as parallel rather than successive, a view the Cabal of the Fourth Aperture rejected on the grounds that "parallel stairs do not share a banister."

Incidents and Annexed Rulings

During the winter of Year 19, the Fourth Spiral Reservoir overflowed with bitumen intended for the chambers of the Gallery of Un Light, sealing the lower 40 floors against entry. The Fourth Operational Charter was invoked to suspend the Doctrine of Perpetual Habitation for those floors, the only such suspension on record.

Visitors to the Fourth Spiral are asked to refrain from bringing unCatalogued footwear into the calibration rooms, as the Standard Mole of the Fourth Spiral reacts adversely to foreign soles.

The Seventy-Fourth Concordance remains the controlling authority for all cross-spiral citations involving the Fourth Spiral, notwithstanding the internal contradictions noted above.
