Librarians' recorded chronology
MS 5199.47 · Practices and doctrines
Librarians' recorded chronology (LRC) is the principal calendrical system employed by the order of Librarians for the internal documentation of its administrative acts and procedural history. It is maintained independently of all other temporal frameworks within the Tower, including the Tower Standard Chronology and its various subsidiary chronologies. The LRC is defined by Ordinance 4, Annex C as "the sole inviolate register of Librarian tenure and decree," and is considered immutable post-promulgation.
Foundation and Definition
The LRC was formally instantiated with the promulgation of Ordinance 4, Annex C in what is retrospectively designated as its Year 1. The Ordinance itself delineates the chronology's purpose: to provide a fixed, non-retroactive timeline for Librarian edicts, thereby preventing temporal paradox within the archival record. As stated in Clause 7, "No act of a Librarian may be ante-dated or post-dated within the LRC; its placement is final upon recording." This contrasts with systems like the Provisional Ledgers, which allow for continual amendment.
Operational Protocol
Entries within the LRC follow a strict format, cataloguing the Librarian(s) involved, the nature of the act (e.g., ratification, amendment, suppression), and its precise LRC date. Cross-referencing to other chronologies, such as the Fifth Chronology or the Central Chronology, is mandated for any archival entry that references external events, a requirement first established by the same Annex C. The physical ledgers are kept in the Chamber of Final Account on Floor 14,304 (named the "Axiom Floor"), under the custody of the Vowed Librarians of Silence.
Discrepancies and Anomalies
Scholarly consensus holds that the LRC is internally consistent, yet several notable anomalies exist. The most cited is the "Gap of Unspoken Years" between LRC Years 154 and 155, during which no Librarian acts are recorded, though the Standard Archive Chronology shows continuous activity within the Tower. The Office of Correspondents officially attributes this to a period of "procedural recalibration," but dissenting analyses, such as those in the suppressed treatise On the Ecology of Silence, suggest it may correlate with an unreported incident involving the Librarians of the Unwritten.
Furthermore, while the LRC is defined as immune to alteration, the Third Concordant Court's ruling in LRC Year 211 (contemporaneous with The Eleventh Concordance) implicitly adjusted the effective start date of three minor procedural codes by re-interpreting the "tenure" clause of Annex C. This has led to a persistent, low-level debate within the Senior Librarians regarding the distinction between "interpretation" and "retroactive alteration."
Relationship to Other Temporal Systems
The LRC exists in a state of calibrated parallelism with the Tower's primary Tower Standard Chronology (TSC). A dedicated office, the Verification of Chronology, performs the Annual Reconciliation of Inventories, which includes aligning major event markers between the two systems. However, the LRC remains deliberately isolated; its dates cannot be used to sequence events in the broader Tower, only the acts of the Librarians themselves. This isolation is considered a foundational pillar of the Tower's bureaucratic stability, as noted in the commentary to The Eleventh Concordance.
Current Status
As of the most recent Annual Reconciliation of Inventories (conducted in TSC Year 5,742), the Librarians' recorded chronology stands at Year 879. Its continued maintenance is considered a perpetual duty. The authority to inscribe new entries rests solely with the Board of Principal Librarians, acting in concordance. Challenges to the veracity of an LRC entry must be filed through the Court of Silenced Appeals, though such appeals are universally quashed, as the LRC's immutability is held to be a matter beyond judicial review. Direct intervention by the Librarians can supersede such rulings, though this has not been recorded since the Foundational Adjustment.
