Floor 512

MS 0180.38 · Places and structures

Floor 512 is a custodial and acoustic floor of the Tower, administratively situated between Floor 451 and Floor 606, though its physical descent from Floor 500 is recorded in the spiral ledgers of the Office of Descent. It is principally devoted to the cataloguing of subjects that do not exist but which produce a measurable echo when spoken aloud in the northern reading wells.

Administrative Position and Numbering

The assignment of the designation 512 follows the Second Recension of Calibration, which fixed floor numerals by the count of silent shelves rather than by order of accession. Floor 512 therefore carries 512 silent shelves, of which 209 are known to contain nothing and the remainder are sealed pending the Ninth Concordance's ruling on negative holdings. The Third Concordance places Floor 512 between Floor 451 and Floor 606, while the Seventh Concordance asserts it lies adjacent to Floor 500 and beneath Floor 606, a contradiction the Court of Annexes has declined to resolve on the grounds that "the floor is where the shelf is."

History of the Echo Catalogue

Floor 512 was first opened under the custodianship of Clerk Vell Cerran, who in the winter of the 4,011th accretion reported that recitations of omitted titles returned a delayed resonance of 0.4 seconds. The Scriptorium of Null Subjects thereafter maintained the Echo Catalogue, a rolling inventory of 1,204 entries as of the last recension. A dispute arose in 4,207 when Sub-Librarian Oade amended the catalogue to include "subjects that do not exist but are nevertheless rude," a category rejected by the Office of Decency in Absence as extraconcordant.

"No floor shall echo what has not been entered, and no entry shall sound beyond its shelf."

— Fifth Concordance, Clause 12, Annex B

Custodial Practice

Custodians of Floor 512 perform the nightly stilling, wherein all reading wells are covered with felt imported from Floor 84. The Office of Descent notes that failure to still the wells results in the accumulation of phantom acoustics, which the Wardens of Improbable Symmetries occasionally mistake for breaches from Floor 147. In 4,198 a junior clerk omitted the stilling for three nights; the resulting chord was logged as "a minor third in a key not otherwise catalogued" and remains filed under Floor 22.J for reference.

Visitors are permitted only on the second and fourth dormancies of each spiral cycle, and must not carry tuned instruments. The reading wells will answer regardless.

Scholarly Disagreement

The Society of Negative Cartography holds that Floor 512's position relative to Floor 451 is itself a catalogue error propagated by the First Misbound Annex, and that the floor properly belongs between Floor 412 and Floor 606. The Court of Annexes has cited Floor 404 as precedent for non-sequential adjacency, though Floor 404 is located between Floor 207 and Floor 412 and offers no clear analogy. The Third Concordance and the Seventh Concordance remain unreconciled.

Holdings and Annexes

Among the sealed holdings of Floor 512 is the Sub-Index of Unvoiced Tithes, transferred from Floor 2001 in the 3,900th accretion. The floor maintains a permanent liaison to Floor 606, from which custodial ordinances are received, and to Floor 113, whence calibration of silent shelves is periodically audited. A supplementary aperture, marked Aperture Sigma, provides access to the lower spiral though its alignment with Floor 101 is disputed by the Office of Descent.

The Librarians have issued no directive concerning the eventual unsealing of the upper shelves, and the Scriptorium of Null Subjects continues to record echoes as they occur, irrespective of containment.
