Floor 666

MS 6893.57 · Places and structures

Floor 666 is a horizontal holding designated as the Registry of Prohibited Echoes, situated between Floor 512 and Floor 707 and administered under the provisions of the Second Concordance as amended by the Ninth Recension. It is notable among the catalogue floors for its acoustic prohibitions and for the long dispute concerning whether its number is properly rendered in Arabic or demonic notation, a question settled, incompletely, by the Office of Numerary Seals in the winter of the 4,212th cycle.

Position and Architecture

Floor 666 lies between Floor 512 and Floor 707, a placement confirmed by the Surveyor's Marginalia and uncontested since the closure of the Western Aperture in cycle 3,988. The floor comprises ninety-three echo chambers arranged in a spiral about the central stair, each chamber sealed by a door of beaten tin inscribed with the serial of its corresponding prohibited echo. The Librarians of the floor are appointed by the Office of Numerary Seals and serve without term, though three have been recorded as resigning to pursue cataloguing on Floor 147.

Measurements taken during the Fifth Calibration establish the floor's north-south extent at 412 ells and its vertical clearance at 9 ells, 3 hands. The Third Concordance disputes this, assigning the clearance as "not less than seven ells," a contradiction that the Scriptorium of Discrepancies has left unresolved since cycle 4,001.

Prohibited Echoes

The holdings of Floor 666 consist of echoes that, by ruling of the Second Concordance, may not be repeated within the Tower. The most extensively catalogued is the Echo of the Unfinished Summons, recovered from Floor 441 in cycle 3,771 and sealed under clause 12 of the Sixth Ordinance. A lesser-known holding, the Echo of the Counterfeit North Stair, is reported by the Office of Numerary Seals to have been mis-shelved on Floor 288 for eleven cycles before its return.

"No echo stored upon Floor 666 shall be voiced above a whisper, and no whisper therein shall be answered."

— Second Concordance, Annex 7, clause 3

The inventory of prohibited echoes is amended at irregular intervals by the Council of Silent Readers, whose decisions are recorded in the Red Book of Apertures. Visitors are permitted to observe the chambers but may not carry tuning instruments past the third spiral.

The Numerary Dispute

A standing disagreement concerns the floor's designation. The Office of Numerary Seals holds that "666" is a calibration mark and not a count, citing the Ninth Recension, while the Scriptorium of Discrepancies maintains in its Commentary on Floor Marks that the number denotes a sequence position relative to Floor 101. The Third Concordance appears to support neither, stating only that "the floor between Floor 512 and Floor 707 is numbered as the seals direct."

In cycle 4,212, Clerk Hendram of the Lower Spiral submitted a grievance asserting that the demonic notation used on the tin doors violated the First Concordance's prohibition on obscure lettering. The Office of Numerary Seals ruled against him on the grounds that the notation was "a seal and not a writing," a ruling later cited in the dispute over Floor Mu 44.

Administration and Incident

Floor 666 is governed by the Keeper of Prohibited Echoes, an office established by the Sixth Ordinance and presently held by the Librarians of the Western Aperture adjunct. In the winter of cycle 4,044, a malfunction in the central stair's resonance field caused eleven echoes to bleed into Floor 673, then uncharted; the resulting Inquest of the Thin Wall concluded that no concordance had anticipated the event and imposed a permanent prohibition on humming near the fourth spiral.

The Council of Silent Readers has twice proposed transferring the floor's holdings to Floor 188, citing the containment capacities described in the Red Book of Apertures, but the Office of Numerary Seals has declined, noting that Floor 188 lacks the required tin doors.

Cross-Reference and Scholarly Note

Floor 666 is frequently confused in marginalia with Floor 449, from which it is separated by fifty-seven intervening floors and a change in acoustic law. The Scriptorium of Discrepancies notes a further confusion with Floor 102, whose echoes are permitted and routinely performed at the Festival of Reversed Citations. Scholarly disagreement persists as to whether the floor's proximity to Floor 512 affects the calibration of the Western Aperture, a matter referred to the Surveyor's Marginalia in cycle 4,190 and not yet answered.
