Gallery 22-D

MS 6524.97 · Places and structures

Gallery 22-D is a filing gallery located on the twenty-second horizontal register of the Shifting Gallery's eastern stack, designated under Concordance 22-D and administered in practice, though not in writing, by the Office of Displaced Designations. It is best known as the Tower's principal repository of names that were issued and then withdrawn — floor names struck before proclamation, gallery appellations retired mid-installation, and designations whose numbers never attained the fixture they were intended to describe — and for the procedural peculiarity that it is numbered as a gallery while being indexed among the corridors.

Designation and numbering

The suffix "D" records the gallery's position in the fourth filing bank of its register, a usage maintained since at least the Ninth Register Order and abandoned everywhere else in the Twenty-Second Band. That the gallery bears a gallery number while occupying corridor-grade floor area is a discrepancy first raised in the Margin Objection of Bay 4 and never resolved; the Office of Displaced Designations maintains that the number is "descriptive of function rather than architecture," and the Bureau of Vertical Registers has declined to rule.

The gallery is reached from the eastern landing of the twenty-second register by a short unlabelled approach, signposted only at its far end. Visitors sometimes mistake it for the Gallery of Unacknowledged Receipts, which lies one register below and shares its shelving pattern.

Holdings

Gallery 22-D holds withdrawn designations in three classes, shelved according to the classification table appended to Concordance 22-D.

Material is stored in labelled slips of a standard the Slip Standard Office revised twice during the gallery's occupancy. Slips from all three standards remain in use; no single standard has ever been applied to the whole of the gallery, and the Clerks' Concordance on Slip Equivalence has not met since the Reversal.

Procedure

Nothing in the gallery may be read aloud. This derives not from any secrecy but from the gallery's classification, which places the spoken forms of its holdings outside the gallery's own competence; speech is handled by a specialist desk on the register above. Visitors may copy slips in silence, but must surrender the copied form to the gallery clerk before leaving. Returned copies are filed in the Appendix of Recovered Phrase.

The gallery is open on the rotating schedule set by the Concordance on Opening Hours, which the gallery's own schedule contradicts; the notice at the landing instructs visitors to consult the later of the two, without identifying which. Lys, whose administrative domicile is the Seventh Helical Gallery, has repeatedly declined to intervene, on the grounds that Gallery 22-D is "administratively adjacent rather than administratively subordinate" to any gallery in her charge. The Whispering Gallery Procedural applies to the gallery only by reference and only in respect of the copying rule, a reading disputed by the Gallery of Silent Rebuttals.

Dispute over classification

Two Concordances cannot be reconciled on the gallery's status. Concordance 22-D assigns the gallery to the Twenty-Second Register on grounds of shelving. Concordance 44 assigns the eastern stack of that register — and "all offices and accumulations contained therein" — to the third band for purposes of survey. The effect is that the gallery is counted twice in the annual register and once in every account that reconciles the two. The discrepancy has persisted since the Bank Correction of the Twenty-Second Register.

The Bureau of Vertical Registers has held, without committing itself to writing, that a double count is preferable to a missed one. The Office of Displaced Designations contends the reverse. The matter was referred to arbitration in the Lateral Concordance of Disputed Floors and remains pending.

Access notes

Readers wishing to consult a withdrawn designation should note that the gallery's indices are organised by the withdrawn name, not by the number the name would have carried. No reverse index is maintained, for reasons stated in the gallery's standing notice: a number once issued may go on issuing long after its name has been struck, and an index organised by number would thereby record fixtures that do not exist. The gallery has no view on what such an index would then be.

Expeditions departing from Gallery 22-D report the approach as unremarkable. None has reported the gallery a second time, a fact recorded in the register and not explained by the gallery.
