Floor 22.J

MS 3550.02 · Places and structures

Location and Access

Floor 22 is administratively situated between Floor 19 and Floor 45, though its immediate physical adjacency to Floor 19 is documented, while its connection to Floor 45 is primarily through Concordance routing and custodial workflow (see Concordance 45.22.β, "Interstitial Maintenance Corridors"). The primary access stairwell is Spiral 19-Delta, which terminates in the Vestibule of Unseen Corners, the official point of entry. A secondary, smaller aperture designated Aperture 22-Alpha provides regulated egress to the custodial corridors servicing the lower administrative block, though its ultimate terminus is a matter of record-keeping dispute.

Primary Function: The Repository of Erroneous Cross-References

Floor 22 serves as the central depository for all cross-reference errors identified within the Tower's catalogues. This includes, but is not limited to: wikilinks that resolve to a holding other than the one intended; citations to non-existent clauses within the Fifth Concordance; and bibliographic pointers that lead to pages containing only a single, unrelated footnote. The floor operates under the governance of Concordance 22.1, "The Ordinance of Misplaced Intent," which mandates that every erroneous reference, once logged, must be preserved in its incorrect state within the floor's archives. Correction of the original document is strictly forbidden.

Figure 1: Standard shelving unit (Series 22-G) for holding misdirected citations, showing the mandatory retention of the original linking syntax.

The holdings are organized not by subject, but by the precise nature of the error. Key classifications include:

  • Category A (Misdirection): Links that resolve to a semantically related but administratively incorrect holding (e.g., a reference to Floor 111 that resolves to a treatise on acoustic dampening in Floor 1121).
  • Category B (Phantom): Citations to clauses, amendments, or entire sub-Concordances that have never been promulgated.
  • Category C (Circular): Reference chains wherein Holding A cites Holding B, which cites Holding C, which cites Holding A, creating a closed loop without external resolution.
  • Category D (Degenerate): Wikilinks that, upon generation, produce only a blank page or a page containing the single word "ERROR" in a non-standard typeface.

Custodial Protocol

Custody of Floor 22 falls under the purview of the Librarians, specifically the Sub-Order of Referential Integrity, though their role is purely archival. Per Concordance 22.7, custodians are forbidden from attempting to diagnose the cause of an error or from communicating with the originators of the flawed references. Their duties are strictly limited to authentication, classification, shelving, and the maintenance of the Master Error Log. A notable procedural anomaly is the "Schrödinger's Citation" protocol, applied to references that point to a holding which both does and does not exist across different archival mirrors; such items are stored in magnetically shielded chambers on Sub-level 22-Ω.

Notable Holdings

The Malfeasance of Spiral 7
A complete, 40-volume set of expedition reports from Floor 2001 that consistently and erroneously cite "Third Concordance, Clause π" for procedural authority. Clause π has never been ratified.
The Williamson Loop
The physical manifestation of a Category C circular reference involving the culinary guidelines of Floor 606, the waste management policies of Floor 712, and the lighting regulations of Floor 441. The three bound volumes are stored on a rotating carousel to visually represent the inescapable loop.
Archive 22-13
A collection of 1,847 separate citations all intending to reference the "Blue Codicil of Floor 147" but which instead resolve to a single, poorly taxidermied songbird housed on Floor 84. The bird is also present on Floor 22, stored in a hermetic case adjacent to the citations.

Scholarly Disputes and Concordance Conflicts

The primary scholarly dispute regarding Floor 22 concerns whether it causes referential errors or merely collects them. The Fourth Concordance (Clause 22.0.1) firmly states the floor is a passive receptacle, a "sink for institutional noise." However, the rarely-invoked Seventh Concordance (Annex Δ) implies that the act of logging an error on Floor 22 can, under specific circumstances, retroactively introduce the error into past documents, creating a causal paradox. This conflict remains unresolved, and research into the matter is strongly discouraged by the Librarians' Standing Committee on Temporal Consistency.

A secondary dispute involves the floor's numerical designation. A faction within the Sub-Order of Numerological Alignment argues that, given its function, the floor should bear a non-integer or imaginary number. This petition has been repeatedly denied, most recently under Concordance 19.45., which reaffirms that "the allocation of floor numbers is an administrative, not a descriptive, act."
