Parallax Index
MS 0974.36 · Practices and doctrines
The Parallax Index is a non-linear cataloguing system, developed by the Candlemark Choir, designed to record and manage artifacts whose existence or primary attributes are contingent upon observation. As defined in the annex to Ordinance 412.7, it contravenes the earlier Doctrine of Singular Designation by allowing a single artifact to hold multiple, mutually exclusive catalogue entries, the active state of which is determined by the observer’s spatio-perceptual relationship to the item.
“Where the object refuses singularity, the index must embrace multiplicity. The true location of an entry is not on the shelf, but in the shift between vantage points.”
Operational Principles
The Index does not reside on a single floor or within a standard satellite index framework. Instead, it is maintained as a distributed network across several associated locations, primarily the Parallax Gardens (Floor 188) and the Class-Δ Observational Atrium in the Parallax Halls (Floor 317). An artifact entered into the Parallax Index is assigned a Base Designator (e.g., PI--449), which spawns a set of Variant Entries. These variants are not copies but potential states of the object, each linked to a specific Perceptual Flattening Quotient (PFQ) gradient and observational protocol.
The active variant for a given researcher is determined at the moment of inquiry by a series of calibrated PFQ diffusers, often made of Stilled Silver, and the researcher’s own parallax shift relative to a designated Anchor Point. The technology for this calibration is rooted in the same principles as the Parallax Adjusters used in the Canted Halls prior to the Seventh Concordance.
Physical Infrastructure
The primary access hub for the Index is the Central Lens Chamber within the Parallax Halls. The chamber’s walls, ceiling, and floor are sheathed in Stilled Silver, creating a high-PFQ, static environment essential for baseline measurement. In contrast, the Parallax Gardens utilize a network of mobile Stilled Silver diffusers embedded in growth lattices to create dynamic PFG gradients, allowing biological specimens to be indexed under conditions of “required parallax” for processes like photosynthesis.
Secondary terminals, known as Ocular Nodes, are installed at strategic points such as Parallax Landing on Floor 7,003 (near Spire 44) and within the Sympathetic Floor Index on Floor 45. Each node must be regularly synchronized via a two-observer verification hum outlined in Ordinance 412.7 to prevent entry drift.
Jurisdiction and Disputes
Administrative responsibility for the Parallax Index is a noted point of contention. The Candlemark Choir, as creators, claim curatorial authority under the precedent of “Inventive Stewardship.” However, the Librarians of the Parallax Halls assert direct operational control, citing their management of the physical infrastructure and their role in containing “perspectival anomalies.” This dispute is exacerbated by the Halls’ adjacency to the Canted Halls, leading to frequent jurisdictional overlaps logged in the Index of Irreconcilables.
The Materialist and Metaphysical indexing schools are fundamentally opposed to the Parallax system. The Materialists reject its reliance on non-empirical observer states, while the Metaphysical school argues it dangerously reifies perceptual phenomena, best left to the Silent Index. These debates often spill into the practical realm, causing significant queue formation at the Central Lens Chamber during scholarly conventions.
Notable Indexed Artifacts
While the full catalogue is inherently unstable, several entries have achieved a degree of notoriety through consistent reappearance in academic literature.
- PI-δ-07 (The Twinned Chalice): Manifests as either a silver goblet brimming with light or a leaden cup holding absolute shadow. The determining variable is the observer’s distance from the northern wall of the Lens Chamber at the time of request.
- PI-λ-33 (The Echo Atlas): A cartographic portfolio that details the geography of Floor 1,114-Δ in one state, and in its variant state, provides an accurate map of the reader’s own childhood home—a location which, by Tower doctrine, does not exist.
- PI-σ-412 (The Librarian’s Reflection): Not an artifact but an entry concerning a specific, unnamed Index-Tender. In one variant, the tender is recorded as having retired to the Gardens in 712-AU; in another, the tender is listed as a foundational member of the Wandering Index. Both entries cannot be simultaneously true, yet both are maintained.
Systemic Anomalies and Risks
The Parallax Index is prone to recursive observation loops, where the act of retrieving an entry alters the entry’s criteria for retrieval. Protocol 19-G requires an Index-Tender to perform a “hard reset” using the Metric Recalibrators on Floor 89 following any such incident. A more serious risk is “Catalytic Collapse,” wherein two mutually exclusive variants are accidentally activated for the same observer, resulting in either the temporary dissolution of the artifact or, in three documented cases, the onset of severe ontological nausea in the researcher, requiring convalescence in low-PFQ zones.
Despite these challenges, the Index remains the Tower’s primary methodological framework for engaging with the contingent real, a necessary contradiction in the endless work of cataloguing that which is not.
