Metaphysical Index
MS 9544.76 · Practices and doctrines
Metaphysical Index is a specialized branch of abstract cataloguing developed by the Department of Metaphysical Topology for the classification and ontological management of non-material entities and their conceptual substrates. Its primary unit of classification is the Unitary, a formally defined quantum of existential coherence.
Structure and Principles
The Index is organized as a multi-dimensional schema, with the Unitary serving as the base coordinate. A Unitary (designated Ψ-0 through Ψ-Ω) represents the minimal, self-consistent existential state of a concept prior to its interaction with classificatory frameworks. Higher-order structures, such as Wings (Class VII, Ψ-7) or Spires (Class IX, Ψ-9), are built from aggregated and harmonized Unitaries. The Index does not catalogue objects, but rather the potential for objecthood under specified metaphysical conditions.
Operational use of the Index requires Metaphysical Calibration, an iterative process outlined in Annex B of the Third Concordance. Calibration aligns a subject's existential parameters—such as conceptual density, temporal persistence, and affinity for observation—with a pre-approved Metaphysical Index profile. A successful calibration is certified by a Certificate of Conceptual Coherence.
Applications in Catalogue Maintenance
The Metaphysical Index provides the theoretical backbone for several critical archival procedures. It is the referential foundation for assessing metaphysical decay gradients in ephemeral holdings, where a TDI score maps directly to a Unitary stability coefficient. The controversial classification of the Wandering Index of Floor 1,114-Δ was attempted using a provisional Metaphysical Index template (Form Ψ-Δ), with inconclusive results.
Furthermore, the Index governs the protocol for handling Irreconcilables—holdings that actively resist standard cataloguing. Per Clause IX, an Irreconcilable must be provisionally assigned a "floating" Unitary designation, which is then incrementally anchored through calibrated exposure to stabilizing indices, such as a Sympathetic Floor Index or the Silent Index.
Jurisdictional Disputes
The authority of the Metaphysical Index is not universally acknowledged. The Department of Metaphysical Holdings maintains a longstanding minority position, arguing that the Index improperly reifies conceptual abstractions, thereby creating the very ontological instability it claims to measure. This dispute centers on the interpretation of Clause IX, which the Department of Metaphysical Holdings argues grants it primary jurisdiction over all "manifested non-materialia," a category it contends includes many entities currently managed under the Metaphysical Index.
A particular point of contention is the classification of photophobic objects. The Department of Metaphysical Holdings advocates for a separate calibration process based on material resonance rather than Unitary coherence, a proposal repeatedly rejected by the Topology Department as "methodologically regressive."
The Spectre of the Unfinished Index
A persistent meta-phenomenon within the discipline is the so-called Spectre of the Unfinished Index. This refers to the recurrent apparition of a hypothetical, perfect Meta-Index—a complete mapping of all possible Unitaries and their interrelations—that is perceived by cataloguers during prolonged calibration sessions. The Librarians have formally debated whether the Spectre constitutes a genuine, low-grade metaphysical phenomenon (a "passive conceptual echo") or is merely a systemic artifact of the Index's own complexity, a form of professional fatigue.
"The pursuit of the Unfinished Index is the pursuit of a shadow cast by the Index itself; to catalogue it would be to fold the catalogue into its contents, a violation of foundational paradox." – Ruling 114.7 from the Proceedings of the Committee on Abstract Integrity.
Related Indices
The Metaphysical Index exists in a dialectic relationship with other major indexing systems. It is often positioned as the antithesis to the Materialist Index, which catalogs only entities verifiable by direct physical interaction. The Central Index utilizes Metaphysical Index protocols for approximately 3.7% of its entries, primarily those relating to non-linear queue formations and ambient archival anxiety. The relationship with the Satellite Index is one of subordination, as all Satellite Indices must, by Ordinance, derive their ontological permission from a root Unitary within the Metaphysical Index.
