Materialist Index
MS 0031.65 · Documents and ordinances
The Materialist Index is the official physical ledger and concordance-register maintained by the Materialist School to track the empirical properties, documented contradictions, and ontological weight of Concordance annexes and fragments. Housed in the School’s primary scriptorium on Floor 7,422-Ξ, its entries are considered by the School to be the definitive physical record of a document’s argumentative mass, superseding its nominal content.
Physical Specifications and Construction
The Index is a single, non-circulating volume bound in cured archival-mite carapace over a substrate of laminated silence-wood. Its vellum pages are cut from the same batch of Fifth Spiral parchment used for the original Annex Omega-7, Fragment 12, establishing a sympathetic link to all derivative documents. Each entry is inscribed with an iron-gall ink whose formula includes minute quantities of Archival Dust collected from the disputed corridors adjoining the Index of Irreconcilables.
The volume measures 42 cm by 30 cm by 8 cm and weighs 5.3 kg when empty. Its spine is fitted with the official Theta Caliper, certified by the Materialist Chapter, which is used to measure the precise thickness of any inserted amendment slip. According to School doctrine, this measurement, recorded in ‘theta-microns’, is a primary indicator of an amendment’s procedural heft.
Indexing Methodology
The Index does not list documents by title, date, or subject matter, but by a composite score known as the ‘Materialist Coefficient’. This coefficient is derived from three measurable properties:
- Vellum Density: Measured by the calibrated resonance of a tuning fork struck against the document’s corner.
- Ink Saturation: Analyzed via a standardized light-box to determine the ratio of pigment to fibre.
- Amendment Thickness: As measured by the integrated Theta Caliper.
These values are processed through the School’s proprietary ‘Table of Objective Subjective Properties’ to generate the Coefficient. A higher Coefficient indicates a document with greater ‘argument weight’, and thus higher precedence in any Materialist interpretation of a conflicting directive. For example, Concordance Annex Omega-7, Fragment 12 holds a Coefficient of 8.7, the highest yet recorded, while a routine circulation notice from the Department of Applied Metaphysics might score as low as 0.3.
Administrative and Legal Role
The Index’s entries are frequently cited by the Materialist School in procedural disputes. During the Contest of Contradiction, Guildmaster Aris successfully argued for the precedence of a lower-numbered Concordance clause over a higher one by demonstrating the former’s superior ink saturation as logged in the Materialist Index. This established a precedent where the Index’s physical metrics can, under certain sub-clauses of Emergency Protocol Theta, temporarily override traditional hierarchical interpretation.
The Index-Tender of Floor 7,422-Ξ is required by local ordinance to consult the Materialist Index before filing any Sympathetic Floor report, to ensure the ‘physical precedent’ does not contradict the ‘nominal precedent’. This has, on seventeen documented occasions, resulted in the non-filing of otherwise mandatory reports.
Controversies and Disputes
The authority of the Materialist Index is not universally recognized. The Central Index administration regards it as a supplementary curio with no binding power, citing Concordance Annex Theta-3, which states that ‘no measure of the vessel shall alter the content of the message’. The School counters by citing the superior vellum density of their own founding charter, Annex Omega-7, Fragment 12, as proof that their methodological annex possesses greater inherent authority.
A more practical dispute concerns the Index’s update protocol. The School insists that only amendments written on parchment from the designated Fifth Spiral batch may be entered, to maintain sympathetic continuity. A 30-year shortage of this parchment has left the Index increasingly out-of-sync with the rapidly amended Master Index, leading to what critics call ‘procedural parallax’. The School argues this lag is a feature, not a bug, as it allows time for the ‘argument weight’ of new amendments to settle and become physically measurable.
Related Artifacts and Derivative Works
The School maintains several subordinate indices calibrated against the primary volume:
- The Satellite Index: A portable, abridged version used for field verification of document properties.
- The Silent Index: A blank duplicate volume maintained in a vacuum-sealed chamber, intended to record the ‘potential weight’ of unwritten or revoked amendments.
- The Index of Ambiguous Precedents: A ledger that cross-references cases where the Materialist Coefficient contradicted the ruling of the Index of Irreconcilables.
The data from the Materialist Index was also instrumental in the School’s deep-spectrum analysis of The Miletus Fragment, which aimed to prove the fragment was not an ancient text, but a future amendment that had ‘precipitated’ into the present timeline, based on anomalous ink-alignment patterns.
