Lux-Veritas Index
MS 2779.09 · Practices and doctrines
The Lux-Veritas Index is a standardized measure of the permissible luminous intensity (in lux) at which archival materials, particularly those classified as Photophobic Holdings, may be consulted without risk of compromise to their perceived reality or structural integrity. It serves as the primary regulatory metric for illumination protocols across all reading rooms and stack-access corridors within the Tower.
“No shadow shall fall across a reference text in such a manner as to suggest a premature conclusion.”
— Preamble, Ordinance 4
The Index’s theoretical foundation originates from the aforementioned clause, interpreted by subsequent Librarian councils to necessitate a quantifiable relationship between light, shadow, and the stability of non-existent subjects. The Index is maintained by the Office of Luminous Compliance, an auxiliary body reporting to the Master Index.
Calculation and Application
The Lux-Veritas value (Lv) for any given holding is not a fixed property of the material itself, but a dynamic function of the holding’s current catalogical context, ambient epistemic pressure, and the specific clauses of the Index of Ambiguous Precedents being invoked during consultation. The standard formula, as codified in Annex Δ of the Central Index, is:
Lv = I0 / (( + σ))
Where I0 is the baseline illuminance of the host floor (e.g., 17 lux on Floor 10,007), is the concordance conflict coefficient for the session, and σ represents the shadow-ambiguity quotient derived from the Silent Index.
In practice, reading rooms are equipped with rheostatic luminaires calibrated to the Lux-Veritas Index. A researcher requesting a photophobic holding must present a docket stamped with the current Lv value, which the room’s Index-Tender uses to set the maximum illumination. For example, consulting the Apologia of the Unseen Bishop, with its documented tolerance of 0.5 lux, would require an Lv calculation resulting in a value at or below that threshold.
Calibration and Disputes
Calibration of the Index against physical standards is performed using Lux muta cultures, as their perpetual, non-electrical glow provides a stable reference point unaffected by the Tower’s occasional fluctuations in conceptual grounding. The Sympathetic Floor Index is consulted to ensure cross-floor consistency.
Significant scholarly disagreement exists regarding the inclusion of reflected light in the Lv calculation. The Materialist School, referenced in the Materialist Index, argues that only direct illumination matters. The Refractionist School, whose tenets are partly recorded in the Index of Irreconcilables, maintains that light reflected from the pages of adjacent, conceptually contradictory holdings can compound photophobic degradation, necessitating a more complex formula. This dispute has led to the creation of parallel Lux-Veritas advisories in some wings, a situation logged under “Illumination Inconsistencies” in the Satellite Index.
Regulatory Integration
The Lux-Veritas Index is deeply integrated into the Tower’s broader regulatory framework. Updates to the Fixed Ladder Index, which maps permissible vertical access routes, trigger an automatic review of Lv values for all holdings on the affected floors, with notifications routed to the Central Index. Furthermore, the quarterly reconciliation performed by the Master Index between the Index of Regrettable Omissions and the Index of Superseded Clauses includes a mandatory audit of illumination protocols for any holdings mentioned in both.
Violations of the prescribed Lux-Veritas level for a holding are treated as a breach of Concordance. Penalties typically involve temporary suspension of illumination privileges for the offending party and a mandatory re-cataloging of the affected material, a process overseen by the Index-Tender and documented in the Index of Unresolved Imperatives.
Notable Exceptions
The Index is suspended within the Wandering Index of Floor 1,114-Δ, as the floor’s non-Euclidean geometry and mutable light sources make standard measurement impossible. Access to holdings there operates under a special dispensation based on whispered consensus rather than quantified lux. Similarly, the profound darkness maintained around certain entries in the Index of Superseded Clauses is governed by tradition, not a calculated Lv, though the Master Index retains custodianship over both the tradition and the clauses.
Ultimately, the Lux-Veritas Index functions less as a precise scientific instrument and more as a bureaucratic ritual—a formalized acknowledgment that the act of observing a thing which does not exist requires carefully managed conditions, lest the observation itself become the thing that is not there.
