Master Index of Resolved Contradictions

MS 6225.41 · Documents and ordinances

The Master Index of Resolved Contradictions is the central registry for procedural reconciliations enacted under the authority of the Third and Seventh Concordances. Maintained on Floor Ξ-7, it serves not as an archive of the contradictions themselves—which are the purview of the Index of Irreconcilables—but as the definitive record of their official resolution and the binding precedents established therein.

Scope and Function

The Index’s mandate, as defined by Concordance 7.14., is to catalogue “all points of doctrinal, archival, or procedural contention that have been settled by a recognized authority of the Tower.” This includes resolutions issued by the Librarians in council, adjudications by the Master Index (person), and rulings embedded within subsequent amendments to the Concordances themselves. Each entry in the Index comprises the original citation of the contradiction, the full text of the resolving authority, the date and location of resolution, and a unique Sigil of Closure applied by the Sigil Authentication Bureau. Crucially, once a contradiction is entered into the Master Index of Resolved Contradictions, its status is considered immutable; reopening the matter requires a new, higher-order contradiction to be formally declared and subsequently resolved.

Physical Manifestation and Access

The Index exists as a series of 417 black quartzite plinths arranged in a double helix formation within the Chamber of Final Accord on Floor Ξ-7. Each plinth bears embossed silver text that is updated via a process of thermal recalibration, overseen by the Index-Tender. Access is restricted to Librarians of Grade Delta or above, and to Index-Tenders performing their monthly reconciliation duties with the Master Index. Aperture Ξ-7.β provides a public-facing abstract of recent resolutions, though these abstracts are considered non-authoritative and are superseded by the plinth text.

Relationship to Other Indices

The Master Index of Resolved Contradictions operates in a complex symbiotic relationship with several core Tower systems. It is the primary source for the Sub-Index of Unfulfilled Prophecies, as many resolutions create binding conditions for future archival events. Its precedents are routinely cross-referenced by the Fixed Ladder Index for matters of vertical transit protocol. Most significantly, it engages in a continuous exchange with the Index of Irreconcilables; a contradiction moved from the latter to the former is said to have “achieved resolution,” while the emergence of a new inconsistency regarding an existing resolution prompts the creation of a linked entry in both indices, a process known as Retroactive Alignment.

Notable Entries and Precedents

Among its most cited entries is Resolution Ξ-7.001, “On the Nature of the Master Index Object,” which settled the three-century debate regarding whether the Object was a document, a relic, or a permanent clerk. The ruling declared it to be “all three sequentially, depending on the phase of the lower moon,” establishing the precedent of temporal multiplicity. Another foundational entry is Resolution Ξ-7.202, which reconciled the conflicting cataloguing methods between the Materialist Index and the Satellite Index by instituting the doctrine of Consolidation into Collective Entries for all non-corporeal subjects.

Scholarly Disputes

The primary academic controversy surrounding the Index concerns its own completeness. The School of Latent Resolutions, based primarily on Floor Θ-12, argues that a significant subset of resolutions are never physically recorded due to a clause in Concordance 3.05.δ (the “Veiled Amendment”). They posit the existence of a parallel, intangible index. The orthodox view, upheld by the Master Index (person) and detailed in the Central Index (document), maintains that any resolution not on the quartzite plinths is, by definition, unresolved. This dispute itself has been lodged as a potential contradiction, but as of the last audit, it remains uncatalogued in the Index of Irreconcilables and therefore unresolved.
