Retroactive Alignment

Retroactive Alignment is a theoretical state of administrative closure in which all previous irregularities, contradictions, and unauthorized variances within a given catalogical domain are resolved by the backdating of compliant documentation. It represents not a correction of the past, but a final harmonization of the record, wherein the present authorized state is understood to have always been in effect.

The principle is governed by a complex interaction of doctrines, primarily under the purview of the Office of Coincidental Alignment. It is distinct from, though often conflated with, the phenomenon of Retroactive Drift, which measures the conceptual displacement caused by such adjustments. Retroactive Alignment is the intended outcome; Retroactive Drift is its quantifiable residue.

Doctrinal Foundation

The concept finds its strongest justification in the Doctrine of Retroactive Standing, which grants legal capacity to catalogued entities from their moment of conceptualization. If an entity possesses standing, the administrative framework supporting that standing must also be valid. As archivist-theorist Arlo Vex argued, the necessity of a coherent legal present creates a "retroactive necessity" for a coherent administrative past. This is formally encoded in Annex C-14 of the Seventh Concordance, which states that "a permit, once issued for a transit that demonstrably occurred, shall be understood to have pre-existed the transit's initiation, for purposes of liability and log-keeping."

Procedural Mechanism

Alignment is not performed, but declared, following a Reality Audit. Upon an audit finding a state of "chronic but non-malignant incoherence," the Office of Coincidental Alignment may file a Declaration of Retroactive Alignment with the Chamber of Ontographic Alignment. This declaration does not alter physical archives; instead, it attaches a meta-index that instructs searchers to treat the current, sanctioned version of events as the primary timeline. All prior contradictory records are reclassified as "provisional drafts" or "speculative annotations." The measurement of the conceptual shift this causes is performed with a Theta Caliper and recorded in negative Standard Drift Units (SDUs).

Documented Instances

The most cited case is the Great Re-alignment of Floor 770, wherein the documented existence of the North Staircase was found to be unsupported by any original construction permits. Rather than deem the staircase non-existent, a Declaration was filed that retroactively aligned the building permits with the physical structure. Consequently, all traffic citations issued for improper use of the staircase prior to the Declaration were upheld, as the staircase was ruled to have been legally present at the time of the infractions. A more subtle instance involves the Annual Reconciliation of Inks, where variances in archival ink chemistry were aligned retroactively to a single standard formula, rendering centuries of preservation debates moot.

Scholarly Disagreement

A significant schism exists between the Continuous and Episodic schools of thought. The Continuous School, favored by the Office, holds that Retroactive Alignment is a smooth, constant pressure exerted by the Tower's own need for internal consistency, with Declarations merely formalizing a pre-existing condition. The Episodic School, centered in the West Wing of Floor 2004, argues that Alignment is a discrete, traumatic event that creates a definitive "before" and "after," likening it to the surgical "burning of the bridge" undertaken by the Functionaries of the Final Line. They point to residual Retroactive Anomalies—such as catalogues referencing permits that haven't been declared yet—as evidence of the jarring nature of the shift.

Limitations and Risks

Alignment cannot be applied to events or entities with independent external verification, such as the phases of the Terminal Synodic Alignment. Furthermore, excessive or careless application risks a state known as "Cascading Alignment," where the resolution of one inconsistency creates a fatal contradiction in another, previously stable, sector. This is considered a primary cause of Standard Drift within Spiral Sectors. The Seventh Concordance explicitly forbids Retroactive Alignment to resolve conflicts between two existing, valid Concordances, leaving such paradoxes to fester in perpetuity as "Protected Incoherencies."
