Theoretical Bestiary
MS 5279.56 · Documents and ordinances
The Theoretical Bestiary is a taxonomic annex to the Third Concordance, codified under Clause 47.2, which classifies and describes hypothetical or conditionally extant fauna whose existence is purely a product of architectural, administrative, or speculative necessity within The Tower. Unlike the Bestiary of Unseen Behaviors, which catalogs non-phenomenal conduct, or the Bestiary of Resonant Fauna, which details acoustically dependent species, the Theoretical Bestiary is concerned with creatures whose reality is contingent upon unresolved conceptual premises, such as the completion of a Theoretical Blueprint or the ratification of a pending ordinance.
Origins and Jurisdiction
The Bestiary was formally established in the aftermath of the Great Calcification Event (Recorded Date: 14 Sigma-Ω), as a means to contain the proliferating fauna postulated in Guild of Theoretical Mechanics proposals. Its custodianship is a shared responsibility, falling primarily under the Guild of Theoretical Mechanics (GTM) for ontological validation, and secondarily under the Realized Absence Guild for documenting the behavioral vacuums these theoretical creatures would ostensibly fill. Disputes regarding an entry’s classification or potential migration to a realized bestiary are adjudicated by the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild, often referencing precedents set by the Court of Unseen Precedents.
Structural Principles
Entries follow a standardized template: a Postulate of Being (the condition for the creature's manifestation), a Spectrum of AttributesCitation of Catalysis (the specific document or conceptual gap that necessitates the creature). For example, the entry for the Axiom-Hound lists its Postulate of Being as "the formal ratification of GTM Ordinance Δ-117," its Spectrum of Attributes includes "a pelage of shifting legal clauses" and "a bark that produces minor binding precedents," and its Citation of Catalysis is "Memorandum Delta3 Gtm to Ge, regarding enforcement mechanisms for conceptual property rights."
This structure intentionally creates a state of Regulatory Stasis for many entries, as the conditions for their realization are often interdependently linked to other theoretical constructs. The most famous such logjam is the Chen Discrepancy, which originated from a self-referential entry in a sub-level copy of the Bestiary.
Notable Entries
The Bestiary contains several cornerstone specimens that are frequently cited in interdisciplinary discourse:
- The Lemma-Bird: A creature whose flight patterns are said to map directly onto unsolved proofs in Theoretical Substrata. Its nesting grounds are theorized to be the interstitial spaces between ratified statutes.
- Silas the Unseen (Theoretical Variant): A conditional iteration of the entity documented in the Bestiary of Unseen Behaviors. This entry posits a version of Silas that would only become active if all current Chamber of Unseen Cataloguers were simultaneously absent, a scenario used as a limiting case in procedural audits.
- Echo-Hawk (Potential State): An extension of the resonant fauna documented elsewhere, this entry describes the Echo-Hawk’s specialized syrinx evolving to replicate not sounds, but the semantic content of unreconciled archival contradictions, thereby making auditory the process of Retroactive Alignment.
- Winged Taxonomists: A class of beings theorized by the GTM to utilize Theoretical Wings for locomotion through non-actualized ecological niches. Their inclusion is a direct application of the Guild's formalist methodology to biological classification.
Controversies and Amendments
The primary scholarly disagreement surrounding the Theoretical Bestiary concerns its ontological status. A faction within the Skeptical Cartographers’ Guild argues that the Bestiary is not a taxonomy of potential creatures, but a topography of conceptual constraints—that the entries are better understood as maps of "impossibility gradients" within the Tower’s logical architecture. This view, while influential, was explicitly rejected in Amendment to the Third Concordance, which reaffirmed the Bestiary's purpose as "a registry of contingent fauna, not a cartographic instrument."
Furthermore, the procedure for transitioning an entry from the Theoretical Bestiary to a realized one remains deliberately vague. The Stasis Quarantine protocols applied to discrepancies like the Chen case demonstrate the administrative inertia that prevents such transitions, ensuring the Bestiary remains predominantly, and perhaps permanently, theoretical.
Physical Manifestation and Access
The sole authorized copy of the Theoretical Bestiary is maintained in a hermetically sealed reading room on Sub-level Gamma-7, designated holding A-77b—the same location implicated in the Chen Discrepancy. Access requires dual authorization from a senior proctor of the Realized Absence Guild and a principal mechanist of the GTM. The pages are reported to be of a peculiar, non-reactive vellum that resists annotation, symbolizing the immutable yet non-actual nature of its contents. Proposals to create derivative or illustrative copies have universally been denied, citing the risk of accidental actualization.
