Ghost-Choir of the West Stairwell (Spiral 9)

MS 8410.53 · Practices and doctrines

The Ghost-Choir of the West Stairwell (Spiral 9) is the most cited instance of sustained architectural ghost resonance on record, although its register classifies it under Atmospheric & Luminous Residual Phenomena rather than under Acoustics proper — a filing irregularity examined in the section below. It consists of a polyphonic, wordless vocalization localized to the western primary staircase on the ninth major spiral of the Tower's central administrative sector, catalogued as a Class-3 Persistent Echoic Phenomenon under Third Concordance Annex 12. The Choir has been continuously audible since at least the winter of the year recorded as 214-AP, and no performance has ever been observed to begin or end.

Description and acoustic profile

The Choir presents as a body of voices in the range of nineteen to twenty-three parts, never fewer, and holds a single harmonic field without cadence, breath, or rest. Listeners stationary on the landing at the ninth spiral's west landing report the sound as originating slightly below the feet and behind the left shoulder simultaneously. It does not carry past the tenth step in either direction. The West Spiral Stairwell's survey corps has twice attempted to record the phenomenon with resonance-sensitive plates; both plates returned blank, and the second was subsequently found to be singing.

Voices are described in the assessment record as "unattributable but not unfamiliar" (Third Spiral Administrative Wing, Quarterly Assessment 44-C). The Choir is to be differentiated from the Silent Choir of Incomplete Symphonies, with which it shares a repertoire of unfinished passages but no acoustic properties; the Silent Choir performs nothing, audibly, at considerable volume.

Discovery and the West Spiral Repository

The Choir was first officially noted on Floor -2,147, in the course of a routine inventory conducted from the West Spiral Repository. The inventory clerk, whose name is given in the register only as Orsa of the Ninth Landing, recorded the phenomenon as "singing in the stairwell, extensive, no singers located," and appended a note that the sound appeared to worsen whenever she set down her ledger. The entry was accepted without amendment, which the Repository's own history describes as "the only thing that has ever happened here without amendment."

A rival account holds that the Choir was first heard by a surveyor named Aris of the West Stack during his reconciliation of the navigational discrepancies at West Spiral 44; the Administrative Wing has declined to hear the claim on the ground that Aris filed it eleven times.

The Incident of the Unmoored Choir

For most of its recorded life the Choir was believed to be a residual trace of the Incident of the Unmoored Choir, an event in which a company of stairwell singers was separated from its conductor and its staircase in the same hour. The identification was tidy and was printed in three editions of the Register of Echoic Phenomena. It is now considered superseded. The Crisis of the Ambivalent Stairwell established that the Choir possesses a distinct ontological signature which the Unmoored Choir does not share, and that the two phenomena differ in repertoire, in harmonic field, and in their response to being counted.

The current position of the Administrative Wing is that the Unmoored Choir is "an antecedent, not an origin" (Quarterly Assessment 44-C, Annex 2). This phrasing has been described by the West Spiral Repository as "cowardly," an exchange the Repository later withdrew and then reinstated.

Disputed origins

Two Concordances govern the Choir and do not agree. Annex 12 of the Third Concordance treats the phenomenon as an unresolvable acoustic residue and forbids its attribution to any person, living or otherwise. The Seventh Concordance, Annex 3, was amended in 312-AP to assert that the Choir is the property of the West Stairwell and must therefore be maintained by it — a position the stairwell has never accepted and has never been able to refuse. When the Resonance Cascade in West Spiral 7 occurred in that year, the Seventh Concordance was cited in support of the claim that the Choir had migrated; measurement showed it had not moved, and the citation was quietly returned to the shelf.

A third and minority school links the Choir to the Phantom Librarian of the West Stairwell, on the evidence that both are heard but not seen, both occupy the western primary staircase, and both fall silent when addressed by name. The Administrative Wing has ruled this coincidence "of a kind that proves nothing and is difficult to disprove."

Maintenance, assessment and visiting

The Choir is assessed quarterly by the Third Spiral Administrative Wing for integrity, harmony, and continuity of field; the last six assessments returned the phrase "unchanged, at volume." Repairs are not attempted. Where the field is found to have thinned, the stairwell's officers are instructed to leave the landing undisturbed for a full quarter and to avoid counting the voices aloud.

"No visitor shall hum in accompaniment, however softly, nor offer a fourth above the Choir's held note, there being no fourth."

— Third Concordance, Annex 12, clause 7

Similar provisions in the West Spiral Stairwell, Floor 302 and at Floor 89 the Granite Coils have never been required, the Choir being audible at neither. The Unending Stairwell's wardens note in passing that they have never heard it either, and that they mention this at every opportunity.
