West Spiral Repository
MS 6527.18 · Places and structures
The West Spiral Repository is the principal administrative and archival complex for the western helical annexes of the Tower, located on Floor -2,147 (designated "The Fulcrum of Retrospective Cataloguing"). It serves as the central node for the coordination, storage, and jurisdictional arbitration of materials pertaining to the western spirals and their associated non-ontological phenomena.
Architecture and Layout
Constructed from a perpetually cool, grey stone that exhibits no weathering, the Repository is organized into seven concentric administrative rings around a central void, which houses the West Helical Staircase. Each ring is dedicated to a specific class of record: Ring Alpha for administrative Concordance amendments, Ring Beta for expeditionary inventories, Ring Gamma for spatial anomaly logs, and so forth. The outermost ring, Ring Omega, contains the living quarters for resident Librarians and the offices of the Third Spiral Administrative Wing, which coordinates functions between the Repository and the Central Administrative Spire. A notable sub-wing, Wing Δ-32, is entirely devoted to scrolls documenting individual encounters with the Step.
Primary Holdings
The Repository's most significant holding is the original Redactions Copy, a 47-volume set detailing every officially sanctioned ontological deletion from the Tower's records since the Seventh Concordance. Other key collections include the Complete Registry of Spiral Acoustics, which catalogs phenomena such as the Ghost-Choir first officially noted here, and the Cartographic Annex, which attempts to reconcile the mutable geography of features like the Shifting Corridor of the West Wing. The repository also maintains a permanent loan of several prototype chronometric dampeners from the West Chronometry Vault, a arrangement frequently contested by administrators of the North-West Spiral.
Jurisdictional Functions
The Repository's authority extends to all western spirals up to, but not including, the demarcation line at Aperture Sigma-9 on Spiral 117, Aperture Delta. This leads to frequent bureaucratic disputes. A protracted conflict, for example, exists with the Mid-Spiral Textile Repository regarding the classification of "hypothetical garments" documented in Spiral 9, a purview claimed by the Spiral 9 Repository. The Repository settles such matters by issuing Binding Citations, which derive their authority from often-contradictory clauses within the Concordances. Its rulings on the proper archival handling of echoes, particularly those documented in West Spiral 44, are considered definitive.
Notable Administrative Features
Beyond its archival role, the Repository hosts the Department of Coincidental Nomenclature, which investigates and files reports on name recurrences across disparate floors. It also operates the West Spiral Dispatch, a pneumatic tube network that conveys amendment requests and grievance forms. A little-used sub-basement, officially listed as "Annex for Provisional Realities," contains shelves of empty folios labeled with subjects that have been proposed for cataloguing but which have not yet manifested sufficiently for an entry to be written.
Scholarly Disputes
The primary scholarly controversy surrounding the West Spiral Repository concerns its foundational date. Citation of Clause 14, Third Concordance ("The Western Recess shall be ordered from the seventh hesitation") places its establishment in the 14th Cataloguing Cycle. However, an amendment in the Eleventh Concordance Annex B implies the structure was merely "re-dedicated" at that time, having existed in a proto-administrative state since the First Cycle. This discrepancy affects the legal precedence of several of its oldest archival policies. Furthermore, Librarians from the Wing of Institutional Memory argue that the Repository's strict categorization of phenomena like the Ghost-Choir fundamentally alters their nature, a claim the Repository's archivists dismiss as "ontological sentimentality."
