Spiral 9 Repository
MS 0165.95 · Places and structures
The Spiral 9 Repository is a major archival complex occupying the entirety of Spiral 9, a disjunct architectural segment located between Floors 73 and 89. It is the primary holding facility for materials deemed "categorically insoluble" by the Third Spiral Administrative Wing, a classification denoting objects, texts, or concepts that persistently resist all standardized archival taxonomies.
Architectural Anomaly
Spiral 9 is unique among Tower spirals for its non-integer floor designation. While its physical structure spans what would nominally be Floors 73 through 89, it is internally referenced only as "Spiral 9" and does not acknowledge the floor numbering of the contiguous Tower structure. Access is granted via Spiral 14, Aperture Kappa, a transfer portal whose operation is governed by Concordance 412-E. The interior geometry of Spiral 9 is reported to be non-Euclidean, with corridor lengths varying based on the procedural status of the material being transported. A 1993 survey by the Central Administrative Spire recorded 47 distinct internal geometries over a standard archival week.
Mandate and Collections
The Repository's mandate, as defined in the often-contested Addendum 3 to Concordance 88-F, is to "receive, contain, and render inert all holdings which, through action or inaction, undermine categorical certainty." Its collections are consequently eclectic and famously unstable. Notable holdings include:
- The Complete Set of Indecisive Edges: A collection of 1,847 blades, each unable to resolve its sharpness, housed in Vault 9-Δ.
- The Archive of Provisional Truths: A wing dedicated to statements that were true only at the moment of their inscription. Cross-referencing is maintained with the Repository of Unanswered Questions.
- The Chamber of Contingent Blueprints: Architectural plans for structures that will exist only if a specific, non-occurring event transpires. This chamber is administratively linked to, but physically separate from, Floor -12.
- The Galleria of Unidentified Mediums: Artistic works created using materials that cease to be identifiable upon completion of the work.
Administrative Protocols
Governance of the Spiral 9 Repository is shared under a tripartite agreement between the Third Spiral Administrative Wing, the Department of Sentimental Residues, and the Repository's own internal council, the Conclave of Nine Proxies. Day-to-day operations are documented in the Spiral 9 Log of Persistent Ambiguity, a publication whose editorial board is famously fractious. Disputes over classification are arbitrated not by appeal to higher Concordances, but through a ritualized game of chance known as "Categorical Dice," the rules for which are inscribed on a single ivory tile kept in the Central Registry of Codified Law.
Controversies and Scholarly Dispute
The most significant ongoing controversy concerns the Repository's relationship with the Mid-Spiral Textile Repository. A subset of textiles archived in Spiral 9—specifically, those woven from "argumentative thread"—exhibit properties that M. Selvage, the late curator of the Mid-Spiral Textile Repository, argued should fall under their purview as per Concordance 727-C, Clause 12. The Journal of Textual and Textile Cohesion has published no fewer than fourteen position papers on the matter, none of which have resulted in a procedural resolution. The current compromise, established in Epoch 8,104, dictates that such textiles are to be physically housed in Spiral 9 but catalogued via a mirror index maintained at the Mid-Spiral facility on Spiral 44, Aperture Delta.
Furthermore, scholars from the West Spiral Repository have questioned the Repository's retention of several scrolls from Wing Δ-32 that document encounters with phenomena bearing similarities to "The Step." The Spiral 9 archivists maintain that these scrolls are not ontologically stable enough for the West Spiral's collections, a position the West Spiral curators vigorously dispute in private correspondence.
Access and Research
Researcher access to the Spiral 9 Repository is among the most restricted in the Tower. Applications must be approved by all three governing bodies and are subject to a mandatory "cooling-off" period of no less than six months, intended to ensure the applicant's categorical intentions have solidified. Approved researchers are assigned a Proxy escort and are permitted to handle only those materials whose ambiguity rating matches or exceeds their own security clearance, as calculated by the Vault of Unanswered Questions's Ambiguity Index. All notes taken within Spiral 9 must be deposited in the Midden of Perfect Transparency upon departure, though certified copies can be requested through the Common Repository after a standard seventy-year embargo.
