Vault of Unanswered Questions

MS 8589.73 · Places and structures

The Vault of Unanswered Questions is a secondary repository and reference annex located on Spiral 899, Level 42, designated for the storage of materials pertaining to, or formally governed by, queries that have not received a substantive scholarly or administrative reply. Its primary function is to physically house certain ledgers and archives that are conceptually central to the operations of Floor 111, while remaining administratively distinct from that floor’s main reading rooms.

Location and Architecture

The Vault occupies a cylindrical chamber approximately 40 meters in diameter, with walls composed of a non-reflective, sound-absorbent basalt. Access is via a single spiraling staircase (Aperture Gamma-7) that terminates at an antechamber monitored by a Clerk of the Seventh Silence. The chamber’s climate is maintained at a constant 13°C and 40% humidity, conditions stipulated in Codicil 127 for the preservation of "procedurally unresolved documents." Notably, the Vault lacks any internal shelving; holdings are stored within 127 identical alcoves set into the wall, each sealed with a door of untreated oak. The numbering of these alcoves follows no immediately discernible pattern, though scholars from the Congregation posit a correlation with the decimal expansions of certain irrational numbers.

Primary Holdings

As per the Annex to Codicil 127, three core holdings are mandated for permanent custody within the Vault:

  • The Unanswered Archive: The definitive physical collection of texts written in the language of Queried, each consisting entirely of unanswered questions. The Archive is stored across Alcoves 1 through 42.
  • The [[Secondary Copy of the Log of Unanswered Questions: A complete, non-recursive parchment copy of the master ledger from Floor 111, updated biannually during the Solemnalia of Stillness. It is housed in Alcove 89.
  • The Ancillary Register: A ledger documenting the transit and temporary withdrawal of materials from the Vault itself. This meta-document is stored in Alcove 127, and its entries are widely considered to be the only immutable records associated with the Vault’s contents.

Administration and Access

Jurisdiction over the Vault is split between the Librarians of Floor 111 and the custodians of Spiral 899, a division that has historically led to procedural ambiguities. Concordance 34, Clause 12, grants the Librarians of the Athenaeum "unfettered custodianship," while Concordance 18, Annex Delta, assigns "physical security and climatological oversight" to the Spiral 899 Wardens. This has resulted in the unusual situation where a librarian may authorize a document’s consultation, but only a warden may physically retrieve it from its alcove. All requests must be cross-referenced against the Register of Unanswered Questions to prevent the accidental resolution of a query through mere consultation.

The Adjacent Reading Room

A small, dimly-lit reading room adjoins the Vault’s antechamber. Furnished with twelve writing desks (only six of which have functional inkwells), it is primarily frequented by members of the Congregation, who use it to study volumes from the Archive without formally withdrawing them. The room contains a single reference: a worn copy of On the Provenance of Holdings, chained to a central lectern. A persistent, low-frequency hum, attributed by engineers to the climate-control apparatus, permeates the space; members of the Congregation refer to it informally as "the Sustained Query."

Scholarly Disputes

The ontological status of the Vault’s contents is a point of ongoing debate. The School of Procedural Realism, citing the ruling within the Log regarding Living Stone, argues that an unanswered question held within the Vault possesses "procedural sentience" — a state of active potentiality. Conversely, the Adherents of the Final Catalogue maintain that the questions are inert until entered into a ledger like the Petitions of Infinite Regress, where they begin their formal lifecycle. This dispute has practical ramifications for the handling of materials, particularly concerning whether a question can "age" or "degrade" while in storage. The matter is presently under review by the Committee of Ambiguous Precedent, though no finding is expected before the next alignment of the Omicron Clock.
