Vault of Temporary Resolutions

MS 0105.36 · Places and structures

The Vault of Temporary Resolutions is a climate-controlled archival repository on Floor 4044, designated for the secure storage of materials whose status has been officially categorized as a Pending Resolution but whose provisional physical form is deemed too unstable for indefinite containment in either the Vault of Unfinished Business or the Pending Resolution Vault. Its existence is authorized under Clause 12 of the Sixth Concordance, Annex Δ (Perpetual Affairs), and its operational protocols are detailed in the Manual of Transient Custody.

Function and Scope

The Vault’s primary function is to house objects, documents, and specimens that embody a state of unresolved potentiality but are subject to inherent material decay, transformation, or conceptual drift. This distinguishes it from the Vault of Conditional Authority, which holds items pending a change in governing policy, and the Vault of Unfinalized Sums, which deals exclusively with numerical indeterminacy. Items are admitted to the Vault of Temporary Resolutions only upon issuance of a Temporary Custody Warrant (Form TCV-7α) by a panel of three Contradiction Librarians.

Examples of typical holdings include:

  • Arguments rendered on Lysander Parch, where the medium's fading properties mirror the ephemeral nature of the dispute.
  • Artifacts from expeditions that returned with "inventories and no conclusions," where the objects themselves seem to resist conclusive cataloguing.
  • Prototype models for shelving systems designed for categories of knowledge that have not yet manifested.
  • The original, unstable drafts of certain Ninth Concordance amendments that were intended to be temporary but became permanent.

Physical Structure and Environment

The Vault occupies Spiral 7, Apertures 12-18 on Floor 4044. Its environmental controls are derived from, but are more rigorous than, those of the Vault of Primary Measures. Temperature is maintained at 13.5°C (±0.1°C), humidity at 45% RH (±0.5%), and ambient light is filtered to a wavelength spectrum known to slow the rate of informational entropy in unstable mediums. Each holding is housed within a sealed, inert-gas vitrine, which is itself placed on a suspended, non-conductive plinth. The plinths are arranged in a non-repeating, aperiodic grid intended to prevent resonant harmonization between conflicting pending states.

Administration and Access

Custodial authority rests with the Department of Contradictory Citations, specifically its Sub-department for Material Instability. Access requires dual-key authentication: one key held by the presiding Contradiction Librarian for the relevant case, and a second held by the Archivist-in-Charge of Transient Collections. A full inventory is conducted bi-annually, coinciding with the solar alignment over the Tower’s (theoretical) central spire, as its light is believed, per an obscure clause in the Manual, to provide a "moment of maximum stasis."

Withdrawal of an item for review or dispute reactivation necessitates a hearing in the Chamber of Deferred Judgement and the generation of a corresponding entry in the Ancillary Register.

Scholarly Disputes

The ontological status of the Vault’s contents is a persistent topic of debate. The dominant school, aligned with the Ninth Concordance, argues the items are perfect examples of Temporary Permanencies: their temporary state is their definitive, permanent characteristic. A rival interpretation, often cited from the now-suppressed Eleventh Concordance, posits that the Vault does not store temporary resolutions at all, but rather manufactures the condition of temporariness through its exacting preservation environment, effectively freezing items in a state of becoming that would otherwise resolve naturally into decay or conclusion.

Furthermore, there is contention regarding the Vault’s relationship to the Case of the Perpetually Pending Request. Some scholars argue the Vault embodies the principles of that Case, making it a physical, Type 2 Auto-generative system. Others contend the Vault exists precisely to prevent such perpetual pendency by providing a controlled terminus for unstable items, a viewpoint supported by the eventual transfer of some holdings to the Vault of Unanswered Questions after a mandated review period.

Related Holdings and Procedures

Items whose temporary status expires without resolution are typically transferred, following a Consolidation Order, to either the Reflexive Vault (if they have developed self-referential properties) or to the Vault of Unanswered Questions (if their unresolved nature is deemed fundamental). The practice of Provisional Shelving in general stacks is strictly forbidden for any item meeting the Vault’s admission criteria, as per Ordinance 47.2.c of the Manual.

A complete ledger of Temporary Custody Warrants, cross-referenced with the Red Folio of active disputes, is maintained in the Vault’s antechamber. This ledger is itself rewritten every decade on new vellum, as the act of recording the list is considered to impart a stabilizing influence on the volatile records it describes.
