Ledger of Partial Resolutions

“No resident of the Tower resides there in their entirety; their name is merely a resolution of all their shadows.”
—Clause 14, Concordance 117: Places of Habitation, Partial or Perpetual
The Ledger of Partial Resolutions (Registry Code: LPR/Δ-γ) is a codicil annex to the Ledger of Perused Paradoxes, authorized under the provisions of Seventh Concordance, Annex D, Paragraph 9. It functions as the formal registry for disputes, queries, and propositions that have been deemed technically resolved by procedural authority, yet whose underlying contradictions or ambiguities remain fully active and unsolved. A Partial Resolution is defined, per the Ledger’s preamble, as “a state of administrative closure without epistemological finality.”
Procedural Genesis
The Ledger was instituted in Year 188 of the Fifth Chronology, following the Long Partial Survey. The Survey revealed that over 60% of all catalogued contradictions were being administratively “shelved” via temporary or semantic rulings, creating a growing nimbus of technically-settled-yet-persistently-problematic entries. The Contradiction Librarian of the era, Arbiter Sigma, argued that such states required their own dedicated ledger, distinct from both the active Pending Resolutions docket and the archival Vault of Temporary Resolutions. The rationale, inscribed in the Ledger’s frontispiece, holds that “to record a resolution as partial is to grant the unresolved its proper shelf; to pretend otherwise is to clutter the active shelves with ghosts.”
Structure and Entries
Each entry in the Ledger follows a standardized five-field format:
- Reference Cross-Index: Links the entry to its source paradox in the Ledger of Perused Paradoxes and any related provisional dockets.
- Resolution Statement: The official, procedurally binding conclusion.
- Persistent Ambiguity Field: A detailed enumeration of the aspects expressly not resolved by the statement.
- Authority Citation: The specific clause of Concordance or ruling Librarian that enacted the closure.
- Catalytic Potential Grade: A prognostic rating (Alpha through Omega) estimating the likelihood of the partial resolution generating new, derivative paradoxes.
A classic example is Entry LPR/Δ-γ-4417, concerning the ontological status of the Phantom Appendices referenced in the Ledger of Partial Acquisitions. The Resolution Statement reads: “The Appendices are hereby declared to be in a state of ‘catalogued absence.’” The Persistent Ambiguity Field, however, notes that this “does not resolve whether their absence is a property of the Appendices themselves or a failure mode of the Catalogue, nor does it address the procedural legitimacy of logging an acquisition of an absence.”
Relationship to Other Ledgers
The Ledger of Partial Resolutions occupies a critical nodal point in the Tower’s bureaucratic ecosystem. It draws its raw material from the Ledger of Perused Paradoxes, provides a terminus for active items in Pending Resolutions, and serves as the primary feeder for the Vault of Temporary Resolutions after a mandated cooling-off period of one century. Crucially, it maintains a reciprocal update protocol with the Ledger of Partial Acquisitions; any acquisition logged as “partial” automatically generates a corresponding Partial Resolution entry regarding the acquisition’s completeness, and vice-versa. This interplay is often cited as the clearest example of the Tower’s self-referential cataloguing principles.
The Warden's Role
Custodianship of the Ledger falls to a specialized sub-role of the Contradiction Librarian, known as the Warden of Partialities. The Warden’s duty is not to judge the quality of resolutions, but to adjudicate whether a given resolution meets the formal criteria for “partiality” and thus warrants inclusion. This determination is guided by the often-contradictory guidelines found in Concordances 7, 42, and 117. The Warden also assigns the Catalytic Potential Grade, a task that relies on intuitive assessment more than algorithmic calculation, and which is therefore a frequent subject of scholarly critique.
Scholarly Dispute
The primary academic controversy surrounding the Ledger concerns its ontological effect. The Proceduralist School, led by scholars from the Gallery of Partial Weaves, argues that the Ledger merely reflects a pre-existing state; it does not create partiality but acknowledges it. The rival Constitutive School, based in the Stairwell of Partial Recall, contends that the act of inscribing a resolution as “partial” within the Ledger’s authoritative pages actively produces the unresolved remainder, effectively breathing sustained paradoxical life into what might otherwise have been a dormant anomaly. This debate is itself logged as a Partial Resolution (Entry LPR/Δ-γ-9001), as the Concordances provide equally valid support for both positions.
Physical Manifestation
The Ledger is a bound tome of indeterminate page count, housed in a climate-controlled alcove on Sub-Level 14 of the Administrative Spire. The pages are vellum, but the ink exhibits peculiar properties: entries deemed to have exceeded their Catalytic Potential and spawned new, significant paradoxes will fade to a light grey, while the Persistent Ambiguity Field text often darkens with time. The Ledger of Material Cohesion notes with characteristic dryness that the binding shows “signs of strain consistent with containing opposed logical vectors, but remains within acceptable tolerances for a document of its class.”
