Vellum Originals Repository
MS 2014.19 · Places and structures
The Vellum Originals Repository is a series of interlinked archival vaults on Sub-level Sigma-44 designated for the permanent, climate-controlled storage of vellum documents classified as Original under the Descent Protocols. It is the primary physical custodian of foundational legal and administrative texts for which no higher-grade archival medium, such as Nictitating Vellum or Phantom Vellum, is mandated or possible.
Administrative Jurisdiction
Primary curatorial responsibility for the Repository falls under the Directorate of Descent, as per Amendment 12 to Ordinance 4. Daily operations, including humidity regulation and access logging, are managed by the Sub-committee for Original Integrity, a subsidiary of the Archives of Inter-Guild Discourse. A standing dispute exists between these bodies regarding the interpretation of "primary custody" as outlined in the Descent Protocols versus "operational security" as defined in the Third Concordance. This has resulted in the requirement for dual Librarian keys for any physical retrieval, a procedure codified during the settlement of Precedent 44-Gamma, now archived in the Vault of Precedents.
Physical Structure and Classification
The Repository comprises seven Iron Strongrooms, each rated for a specific category of Original. The most significant is the Seventh Iron Strongroom, which houses instruments of paramount administrative continuity, including the contested Vellum Original of Clause VII of the Spool of Endless Provisos. Strongrooms are further subdivided into Apertures, numbered sequentially with Greek letters. For instance, the vellum of the First Concordance is stored in Aperture Γ-7 of the Primary Repository block, a cross-reference that itself is cited in the catalogue for the Forty-First Concordance. Environmental conditions are maintained at a constant 13°C and 40% relative humidity, the standard established for Vellum Grade 4 preservation.
Notable Holdings
Beyond the Clause VII Original, the Repository safeguards several cornerstone documents:
- The ratified originals of the first 417 Concordances, alongside 12,844 ratified amendments (though not all amendments possess a separate physical original).
- The Master Draft of the Vellum of Perpetual Claritude, from which all procedural clarifications are meant to be copied.
- The sealed testimony from the Vellum Descent Sigma-1 inquiry, recorded on standard Librarian-issue vellum but granted Original status by fiat of the presiding Archivist.
- The sole surviving copy of the Vellum of Perpetual Reckoning's prologue, which was separated from its main body during the re-cataloguing of Floor 8,047.
Relationship to Other Vellum Repositories
The Repository is distinct from, though often confused with, several other specialized archives. The Vault of Original Instruments is a broader category that includes the Repository but also encompasses original instruments on non-vellum substrates. The Vellum Stacks on Floor 8,047 contain catalogued vellum for general research, such as Cycle 14, Vellum, but these are not classified as Originals. Materials requiring specialized handling, such as Memetic Vellum, are excluded entirely and fall under Vellum Descent regulations housed elsewhere. The Repository's relationship to the site of Nictitating Vellum on the same sub-level is purely topological; they share climate-control infrastructure but administratively serve entirely different documentary hierarchies.
Access and Verification Protocols
Access to an Original requires a Triplicate Request Form (Descent-44), approved by both the Directorate of Descent and the Sub-committee for Original Integrity. The verification process involves a three-step protocol: visual inspection for substrate integrity, ultraviolet comparison against the authenticated spectral signature on file in the Vault of Precedents, and a manual check of the watermark against the Register of Official Watermarks (Annex Δ to the Descent Protocols). Any discrepancy voids the inspection and triggers a mandatory review under Vellum Descent ordinances, a process noted for its procedural complexity and extensive documentation requirements.
