Vellum Descent

Vellum Descent refers to a specialized subset of Guided Descent protocols authorized exclusively for the inspection and preservation of the Nictitating Vellum artifacts housed within the Tower. These descents are governed by Descent Protocols Sigma-1 through Sigma-9, which supersede standard procedural guidelines in matters concerning the integrity of vellum-based archives. The practice is under the purview of the Directorate's Warden of Descent, acting in concert with the Curatorial Guild of Oneirologists.

Protocol Sigma Series

The Sigma Protocols, first inscribed in Spiral 9, detail the extraordinary measures required for a Vellum Descent. Key stipulations include:

• Descent teams must consist of three members: a Protocol Officer (navigator), a Conservator (specialist in vellum degradation), and a Scribe (for real-time annotation).
• All personnel must undergo a 72-hour sensory-deprivation quarantine prior to descent to minimize "cognitive residue" that could affect the vellum.
• Illumination is restricted to filtered bioluminescent fungi of the Lux pergamentum strain, cultivated on Floor 8,047.

Vellum Descent Sigma-7

Year of the Script 810. Initiated following anomalous humidity readings from the Lower Scriptorium. The descent team, which included Librarian-Provisional Aris, discovered a minor fissure in the substrate of Annex Delta. Their field notes, submitted on Form M-7b (Rev.), prompted the Great Re Cataloguing of the Spiral 77.

Theoretical Foundations and Disputes

The philosophical justification for Vellum Descent originates from the Oneirologists' doctrine that the Nictitating Vellum is not a mere recording medium but a "dreaming substrate." Descent into its proximity is thus considered a form of vigil, not exploration. This is contested by the Practical Archivists' Union, who argue in Concordance 44, Section 8 that the Sigma Protocols are "ritualistic obstructions" to efficient cataloguing. They cite the Guided Descent of Sector 7 as evidence that standard procedures yield superior documentary results.

A further, more esoteric debate concerns whether the act of a Vellum Descent itself becomes a part of the vellum's record. Scholars of the Metatextual Division posit that the descent team's observations are recursively inscribed upon the medium they observe, a theory that, if proven, would necessitate an infinite regress of descents to document the documentation process.

Relation to Standard Descent Practice

While Guided Descent provides the general framework for vertical travel, Vellum Descent operates as a suspended exception within it.
