Custodians of Static Artifacts
MS 9770.35 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Custodians of Static Artifacts are a specialized sub-cadre of the Custodians of the Silent Stacks tasked with the physical stewardship, transport, and quarantine of Regulatory Artifacts exhibiting non-dynamic properties, most notably the Static Manifests produced by the School of Static Ontology. Their operational doctrine is defined by an absolute adherence to procedural stasis, treating the artifacts in their care not as documents to be interpreted but as inert, topologically fixed objects.
Foundation and Jurisdictional Mandate
The cadre was formally instituted by Amendment 7.44 to the Third Concordance, following the Vellum Descent incident of 14-Γ-8901, in which a provisional transport of seven Static Manifests resulted in the spontaneous re-scription of two adjacent spiral banisters. The amendment grants the Custodians of Static Artifacts "sole and unimpeachable custody over all registered artifacts bearing a sigma-class stasis seal," a category created concurrently. Their authority is strictly physical; doctrinal analysis remains with the School of Static Ontology, while broader custodial oversight of the Aviary of Static falls to the general Custodians of the Silent Stacks. This division of responsibility is a frequent source of procedural conflict, particularly regarding artifact de-accessioning.
Operational Protocols
Protocols are designed to mirror the static nature of the artifacts themselves. Key procedures include:
- Silent Conveyance: Artifacts are moved only along pre-certified "static corridors"—routes surveyed and verified to have experienced zero metaphysical drift for a minimum of fifty Tower-years. Custodians communicate during transport via a sanctioned lexicon of 37 hand gestures.
- Non-Interpretive Handling: Custodians are prohibited from reading the content of any artifact in their charge. Authentication is performed via seal impression and spectral inertia measurement against the Vault of Primary Measures, not textual review.
- Quarantine Lensing: Any artifact suspected of latent dynamic potential is placed within a triple-baffled inspection lens, a device which permits observation of the artifact's physical form without exposure to its syntactic field.
The Schism of Motive
A central, unresolved schism divides the cadre: the dispute between Intentionalists and Accidentalists. The Intentionalist position, argued in the treatise On the Preservation of Will, holds that the static property of an artifact is a deliberate, embedded ontological command, and thus the Custodian's duty is to honor the artifact's "will to remain unchanged." The Accidentalist position, detailed in the counter-treatise Static as Byproduct, maintains stasis is merely a contingent physical state, like temperature or hue, and the Custodian's duty is merely to maintain stable environmental conditions. This philosophical divide influences practical matters, such as whether a damaged stasis seal invalidates the artifact's protected status (Intentionalists: yes; Accidentalists: no, if environmental conditions are held constant).
Notable Artifacts in Custody
- Manifest Sigma-Ω (The Final Prohibition)
- The bulkiest Static Manifest on record, containing a single, recursively nested prohibition against its own translation. It requires a dedicated palanquin carried by four custodians, and its presence is said to slow the perceived passage of time in adjacent stacks by approximately 3.2%.
- The Lens of Perfect Dullness
- A meta-textual artifact, itself under a sigma-class seal, which describes in exhaustive detail a perfectly featureless crystal lens. Custodians use its description as a calibration standard for inspection equipment, creating a tautological loop of certification.
- Floor 301 Annexation Edict (Superseded)
- A regulatory artifact whose static field failed upon the ratification of Clause 31, rendering it dynamically active. It remains in the Custodians' deep vault due to a jurisdictional deadlock between them and the Custodians of the Aperture over which cadre is responsible for decommissioning it.
Inter-Cadre Conflicts
The Custodians of Static Artifacts exist in a state of perpetual low-grade conflict with several other cadres:
- With the Custodians of the Aperture: Disputes center on whether an aperture used to move a static artifact must be certified as "static" for the duration of transit, or if general aperture regulations suffice.
- With the Custodians of Stairs: Conflicts arise over the definition of a "static corridor" that traverses a stairwell, a space inherently subject to the Reckoning of Stairs and thus considered dynamic by the Custodians of Static Artifacts.
- With the School of Procedural Purists: The School's advocacy for procedural fluidity is anathema to the Custodians' operational code, leading to frequent appeals to the Directorate of Boundary Arbitration.
Current Status
As of the last published Cadre Roster (89-Σ-9013), the Custodians of Static Artifacts number 47 active members, operating from a primary vault on the non-canonical sub-level between Floor 301 and Floor 303 the Aviary of Static. Their request for a formal Floor designation (tentatively proposed as "Floor 0-Static") has been tabled by the Senior Librarians for seven decades, cited under the bureaucratic stasis provisions of Concordance 12, Section 8—a ruling the Custodians, by doctrine, are compelled to accept without appeal.
