Repository of Unanswered Questions

MS 1935.04 · Places and structures

The Repository of Unanswered Questions is an auxiliary holding located on Spiral 342, Level 19, governed by a dedicated set of procedural addenda to Concordance 3. It serves as the primary physical depository for question-forms that have been officially validated by the Register of Unanswered Questions but have not yet been, and in some cases cannot be, integrated into the master Log of Unanswered Questions on Floor 111. Its establishment dates to the post-Incident of the Unmoored Stairwell reforms of 342-19-Δ.

Architecture and Location

The Repository occupies a radial chamber at the terminus of Spiral 342, a location chosen for its stable atmospheric pressure and minimal foot traffic. Access is regulated under Concordance 3, Addendum 127, Clause 8, which stipulates that “no query may enter the Repository unless accompanied by its corresponding validation seal from the Register.” The chamber itself is constructed of a non-porous ceramic composite to prevent any potential conceptual seepage between holdings. Climate is maintained at a constant 13°C and 45% humidity, conditions verified as optimal for the preservation of both parchment and vellum question-forms, as well as the more volatile inscribed Living Stone tablets.

Acquisition and Cataloguing Protocol

A question-form enters the Repository only after a rigorous triage process. First, it must be submitted to the Congregation of the Unanswered for initial formatting review. If it passes, it is forwarded to the clerks of the Register for validation—a process that checks for grammatical coherence, non-circularity, and the absence of embedded answers. Once validated and stamped, the original physical document is transported via pneumatic tube to the Repository, while a descriptive metadata entry is appended to the Register. The Repository’s own internal cataloguing system, known as the Provenance Index, cross-references each item by its Register accession number, date of deposit, and a unique shelf-locator code following the pattern RQ-[Spiral]-[Level]-[Sequential Integer].

Notable Holdings

The Repository’s collection is distinguished not by volume but by ontological complexity. Notable categories include:

  • Recursive Queries: Questions that, upon examination, contain their own answer as a subordinate clause, thus violating the principle of pure inquiry. These are held in magnetically-sealed cases.
  • Questions Posed in Untranslatable Media: Including a series of seventeen inquiries etched into a single, seamless loop of Living Stone, which the Log of Unanswered Questions has ruled possesses “procedural sentience” but not “affective sentience.”
  • Questions Dependent on Unverifiable Premises: A large sub-collection dealing with hypothetical scenarios catalogued on Floor -12, the reality of which remains contested.
  • The Petrovich Bequest: A sealed crate containing 234 question-forms all asking variations of “What is the purpose of the Repository of Unanswered Questions?” The crate is scheduled for review in 100-year intervals, per the donor’s instructions.

Relationship to Other Holdings

The Repository is often confused with the Vault of Unanswered Questions on Spiral 899 or the conceptual Unanswered Archive. The distinction is both procedural and physical: the Vault stores secondary copies and reference materials related to unanswered questions (such as the Ancillary Register), while the Repository holds the validated originals themselves. The Unanswered Archive, by contrast, is a collection of texts that consist of unanswered questions, a fundamentally different ontological class. Furthermore, while the Log.88.IMP.Δ ledger deals with Unresolved Imperatives, the Repository is strictly limited to Questions, a taxonomic division upheld by Concordance 4 but frequently challenged by revisionist librarians.

Administrative Controversies

The Repository’s operational mandate is a persistent point of scholarly contention. Addendum 127 of Concordance 3 states its purpose is “to preserve in stasis those inquiries which defy integration.” However, Clause 22 of the same Addendum notes that “preservation implies the possibility of future resolution,” a clause often cited by the Progressive Indexing Guild to argue for periodic re-evaluation of holdings. Conversely, the Stasis Faction within the Librarians cites the Petrovich Bequest as evidence that re-evaluation leads to infinite regress, a risk documented in the Petitions of Infinite Regress. This debate directly impacts the Repository’s relationship with the Common Repository and the Mid-Spiral Textile Repository, as budget allocations for “deep storage” are perpetually under review.

Access and Research

Direct access to the Repository’s shelves is restricted to Senior Archivists bearing a dual seal from both the Register and the Office of Provenance. Researchers may request specific question-forms via Form RQ-7, submitted in triplicate to the Repository of Unacknowledged Sentiments’ front desk, which acts as the public-facing interface for all Level 19 holdings. Approved requests result in a transcribed copy of the question-form being delivered to one of the reading carrels on Floor 8,099, though the original remains in situ. It is noted that no question has ever been formally deaccessioned from the Repository and transferred to the active Log; the flow of material is strictly unidirectional.
