Repository

MS 7992.95 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Repository (designated Primary Repository in the First Concordance, Clause 1) is not a single location but a categorical designation for any organized collection of holdings maintained under the principles of Concordance. While the term is often used generically to refer to any archival space within the Tower, its precise administrative meaning denotes a custodian body and its associated physical infrastructure, operating under a ratified charter.

Definition and Scope

Per the Repository of Unacknowledged Sentiments Charter, Annex Δ, a Repository is formally constituted by three elements: a charter of incorporation filed with the Central Archive; a defined physical precinct (which may span multiple floors, spirals, or apertures); and a declared purview detailing the categories of non-existent subjects to be catalogued. The charter must be ratified by no fewer than three sitting Repositories, a process that initiates the entity into the cycle of mutual citation and jurisdictional dispute that characterizes Tower governance.

The scope of a Repository's purview is often narrowly, and contentiously, defined. For example, the Mid-Spiral Textile Repository holds archived textiles, while the adjacent Spiral 9 Repository claims purview over "objects of hypothetical utility," leading to frequent disputes over holdings that possess both textile qualities and hypothetical applications. The resulting arbitration records themselves become holdings, typically filed in the Didactic Repository on Floor 899-Ξ.

Notable Repositories

Several Repositories are foundational to Tower operations. The Primary Repository, housing the original First Concordance in Aperture Γ-7, is often considered the archetype. The West Spiral Repository on Floor -2,147 maintains the definitive Redactions Copy. Specialized auxiliary holdings exist, such as the Repository of Unanswered Questions on Spiral 342, Level 19, which supplies material to the Common Repository.

Others are distinguished by their methodological focus. The Grand Harmonic Repository on Floor Ξ-719 employs the Aggregate Echo model for cataloguing, while the Kaelen Repository processes personal sentiments filed via Form DRS-44a. The Stratigraphic Repository serves as the current custodian of polemical documents like The Unfiled Manifesto.

Jurisdiction and Conflict

Repository charters are deliberately overlapping, a principle ostensibly designed to ensure comprehensive coverage but which in practice generates a continuous low-level administrative conflict. Resolution is achieved through citation of the Concordances, which are themselves contradictory. A standard reference in such disputes is the Decree of Conveyance of 712-Ξ, which outlines the protocol for transferring a holding from a Repository of origin to one of "more apt thematic resonance," provided a majority of three arbitrating Repositories agree.

Scholarly disagreement is endemic. The Journal of Textual and Textile Cohesion, published by the Mid-Spiral Textile Repository, frequently contests the classification methodologies of the Spiral 9 Repository, arguing in vol. 44 that "hypothetical utility is a predicate of observer expectation, not of intrinsic property." These debates rarely conclude, as the final arbiter—the Central Archive—declines to rule on what it terms "matters of taxonomic poetry."

Physical Infrastructure

A Repository's physical plant is as varied as its purview. Some occupy vast, named floors like Floor 311: The Repository of Conditional Truths or Floor 441: The Repository of Half-Heard Melodies. Others are nested within larger structures, like the Seventh Spiral Textile Repository, which is physically adjacent to and overseen by Spiral 7, Aperture 42. The Repository of Anticipated Forms on Floor -12 is noted for its extensive use of Wickery in its storage bays.

Access protocols are strictly enforced, often involving specific stairwells. The Backwards Stairwell is the mandated approach to seven lower-spiral Repositories, including the West Spiral Repository. Failure to use the prescribed route is not a security violation but a breach of cataloguing protocol, rendering any acquired holdings "procedurally tainted" and unfit for immediate filing.

Administration and the Librarians

All Repositories operate under the ultimate authority of the Librarians, though the nature of this oversight is deliberately unspecified. Repository staff are not themselves Librarians, but are appointed under the terms of their charter. Daily operation is governed by internal supplements to the Concordances, which are amended with such frequency that master copies are often held in a subsidiary Floor 8,099 vault to prevent accidental alteration during routine consultation.

The system is perpetually self-referential. A Repository's most vital holdings are often the documents that justify its own existence and contest the boundaries of others, creating an archives of archival principle. As noted in the Stratigraphic Repository for Non-Conforming Aesthetics Guide to Self-Citation, "A Repository is not merely a store of things, but the argument for their storage, endlessly refined."
