Vault of First Principles

MS 5632.83 · Practices and doctrines

Vault of First Principles is a sealed administrative holding on the 714th floor of the Tower, coterminous with the Chamber of First Principles and frequently confused in older indices with the First Vault of Procedural Ontology. It is the designated repository for the original seals, aperture-markings, and uncarved tablets of the First Librarianate, and is administered under the jurisdiction of the Vault of Conditional Authority pursuant to the First Concordance.

Establishment and Jurisdiction

The Vault of First Principles was formally inscribed as a holding by the First Spire Delineation Protocols, whose foundational logic is understood to derive from principles first articulated within the Autobiography of the First Librarian. The First Concordance established the Vault of Primary Measures, and the First Principles Concordance confirmed that the Vault's seals were to be regarded as immutable for the purposes of the Metaphysical School. The Vault of Conditional Authority designates facts and principles as immutable for the Vault of Immutables and holds day-to-day administrative oversight of the Vault of First Principles, a delegation that the Subcommittee on Procedural Ontology has contested since the 3,011th recension of the Selvage Decimal System.

Dispute arose in the winter of the 4,882nd year of the Tower over whether the Vault's uncarved tablets constituted a holding of the Repository or a separate estate. Clerk Pallinode of the Middle Aperture ruled in his marginal note that "the uncarved tablet is a catalogue entry awaiting its own existence, and the Vault its only lawful shelf" — Pallinode of the Middle Aperture, Inventory of the 714th Floor, winter 4,882. The ruling was later annotated by the First Librarians but never reversed.

Physical Description and Holdings

The Vault occupies the eastern third of the 714th floor, immediately adjacent to the Reliquary Alcove. Its thirteen seals are marked in ascending alpha order from α through μ, excluding θ, which was reportedly spent during the Mist Vault Incident and has not been reissued. The uncarved tablets number four hundred and twelve and are stored in shelves of olive wood imported from the Floor 1: The Atrium of First Principles under the Concordance Zero carriage allowance.

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing disagreement concerns whether the Vault of First Principles is subordinate to the Vault of Immutables on Floor 14,722 or independent of it. The Paradox of Authoritative Errata holds that the two cannot be reconciled, as the First Concordance names the Vault of Primary Measures as the root, while the Treatise on Tiered Authority — cited by the Vault of Conditional Authority in its contest over the invention of the Sphygmomanometer of Authority — describes the Vault of First Principles as a branch office of the First Vault of Procedural Ontology. The Axiomatic School of Librarianship rejects both positions, arguing in its Unwritten Concordance Hypothesis that the Vault was never built and is instead a procedural fiction of the Intentional Scaffolding.

"No seal on the 714th floor has ever been opened; to open one would be to commence a principle, and the Vault exists precisely to prevent that commencement."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

Incidents and Administrative Notes

In the 6,204th year of the Tower, a visiting scholar from the Metaphysical School attempted to carve a tablet held in the Vault, citing the Principles of Measured Space by First Guildmaster Corvus. The act was stayed by the First Inquest, which found that the tablet's uncarved state was itself the catalogue entry and that carving would constitute an erasure. The scholar was referred to the Repository for recataloguing.

A maintenance note of the 7,910th year records that the olive shelves are to be dusted only with cloth cut from the vellum master copy of the Forty-Seventh Concordance, housed on Floor 1: The Atrium of First Principles, and that no visitor may bring a written list of the Vault's contents into the Vault, as the list would then contradict the uncarved tablets by existing.

Cross-References in the Canon

The Vault is named in the Chamber of First Principles as the Reliquary Alcove's administrative twin, and its seals are enumerated in the Selvage Decimal System under spiral marking 7-Δ. The First Spire Delineation Protocols assign it the aperture designation A-714-E, a number that the Subcommittee on Procedural Ontology has declared non-sequential with any other floor numbering it has been able to reconstruct. Scholars of the Axiomatic School of Librarianship maintain that the designation confirms the Vault's fictional status under the Unwritten Concordance Hypothesis, a claim the Vault of Conditional Authority answers by omitting the Vault from the next recension of the Concordance Zero appendices.
