Protocol of Unbeginning
MS 3772.95 · Practices and doctrines
The Protocol of Unbeginning is a procedural framework governing the archival, authentication, and eventual retirement of events that have been conclusively determined not to have occurred. Ratified under the tenure of the First Librarian and administered by the Academy of Archival Protocol, its primary function is to provide a structured endpoint for the Contradiction Protocol, ensuring that negated occurrences are removed from active catalogues without compromising the integrity of the archival dialectic.
Formal Structure
The protocol is divided into seven codicils, each addressing a distinct phase of the unbeginning process. Codicil One establishes the criteria for initiating the protocol, requiring that a contradiction be resolved to the point of total negation—where not merely the details, but the fundamental occurrence of an event is voided. Codicil Two mandates the creation of a mirror record, a shadow-document that preserves the structure of the original entry while replacing its content with a standardized null statement (see SMP-Δ Form 9). Codicils Three through Five detail the physical and metaphysical sequestration procedures, often involving the transfer of records to a designated Silent Stack on a lower-numbered floor.
Operational Application
The protocol is invoked sparingly, reserved for contradictions of the highest order. Its most cited application is the Grey Expedition Affair, wherein records pertaining to a purported expedition to a non-existent temperate rainforest on Floor 847 were subjected to full unbeginning. The process, which took forty-seven Tower days, resulted in the reclassification of over two hundred associated documents, three maps, and one specimen jar (contents: void) to the archives of Floor 112, a floor specializing in negated geographies.
Standard practice requires that any invocation of the Contradiction Protocol which results in a finding of non-occurrence must, by Concordance, append the Protocol of Unbeginning as its final step. This creates a formal chain of custody from active contradiction to archival oblivion.
Relation to Other Protocols
The Protocol of Unbeginning exists in a complex hierarchical relationship with other archival procedures. It is considered the mandated terminus for the Contradiction Protocol, but it is distinct from the Chen Protocol, which addresses recursive anomalies within a single record rather than the negation of an entire event chain. Furthermore, it should not be confused with the Protocol for Contradictory Attribution, which deals with competing claims of existence, not its absolute absence. Scholars at the Academy of Archival Protocol debate whether the Protocol of Unbeginning is a subset of the broader Archival Protocol or constitutes a unique procedural category.
Philosophical and Practical Criticisms
A significant minority within the Academy, often referred to as the Dialectical Archivists, argue that the protocol is philosophically flawed. They contend that the act of archiving a negated event, even within a mirror record, inadvertently affirms a prior state of potential occurrence, thus creating a "phantom causality." This school prefers the application of the Chen Protocol to recursively collapse such records into themselves until they reach a state of pure metadata.
From a practical standpoint, critiques often focus on the resource intensity of the sequestration process and the potential for "unbeginning creep," where lesser contradictions are elevated to justify the protocol's use, as was alleged in the controversial voiding of the Festival of Unspoken Names records in 14,322.
Current Status and Amendments
The Protocol of Unbeginning remains a cornerstone of high-level archival resolution. It was last amended following the Delta-7-22 incident to clarify its interaction with protocols governing temporal anomalies. A current proposal before the Committee of Procedural Harmony seeks to integrate clauses from Security Protocol Sigma to prevent the malicious invocation of unbeginning to erase inconvenient but verifiably extant records. The protocol's master copy is maintained in the Vault of First Principles on Floor 1, with working copies distributed to all Librarian precincts above Floor 500.
