Grey Expedition Affair

MS 6226.68 · Practices and doctrines

Grey Expedition Affair refers to the sequence of administrative and cartographic irregularities arising from a purported expedition to a non-existent temperate rainforest, the records of which were subsequently voided under the Protocol of Unbeginning. The Affair is principally associated with Floor 847, the Grey Ledgers, and the standing reserve status of Gargoyle Unit Σ--447. It is cited in six Concordances and has never been the subject of a completed inquiry.

Origins and the Purported Expedition

The first irregular document appears as Entry 22 of the Grey Ledgers, housed on The Grey Fields (Sub-level 7-Ξ), dated the 14th of Gildmonth, Cycle 1183. It records the departure of a cataloguing party from Floor 847 toward a temperate rainforest described as "perpetually misted, deciduous, and entirely absent from the vertical index." The Cataloguing Expedition office countersigned the departure, though the Expedition Support register contains no provisioning record. Hieronimus of the Grey Stacks later observed that "the rainforest was catalogued with greater precision than any floor actually confirmed to exist" (Hieronimus of the Grey Stacks, Recension of Grey, Folio 9).

The Cartilaginous Expedition reports, though unrelated in subject, supplied the detailed appendices format later used to document the voided materials. A clerk of the Grey Niche filed a dissent noting that Floor 847 had been previously associated only with storage of inactive seals, and that no rainforest aperture had been mapped under the Cartographic Grey survey of Cycle 1179.

Application of the Protocol of Unbeginning

Following internal objection, the Protocol of Unbeginning was invoked to void all records of the expedition. The order was issued under Clause 3 of the Second Recension and executed by the Grey Convocation, whose primary mandate includes oversight of procedural coherence within the The Grey Fields. Gargoyle Unit Σ--447 was listed as inactive/reserve in direct relation to this action, a status it retains in the current reserve roll.

"No rainforest expedition shall be held to have begun where no rainforest is held to have stood; the ledgers reflecting such are herein unbegun."

— Protocol of Unbeginning, Clause 3, Second Recension

The voiding was later cited as a notable application of the Protocol in the context of a non-existent temperate rainforest, though the Third Concordance Annex 4 disputes whether the rainforest was temperate or merely "broadleaf adjacent," a distinction the Grey Niche debates failed to resolve.

The Grey Ledgers and Sub-level Dispute

Physical Grey Ledgers are bound volumes of 1,000 pages of stone-grey paper treated with magnetite and Wax Cylinder Standard Issue Grey. Entry 22 remains in the volume but is struck through with reserve wax and marked "unbegun." The Grey Convocation holds that the strike constitutes full erasure; the Subcommittee for Paradoxical Preservation, formed after the Affair of the Vanishing Footnote, holds that a struck entry is still an entry and therefore doubly catalogued.

A maintenance note of Cycle 1184 prohibits the recopying of struck ledgers onto Indelible Grey, as the indelible medium does not accept reserve wax. This has prevented the dispute from propagating to the scriptorium annex.

Scholarly Disagreement

The First Concordance names the event the "Grey Expedition Affair" and dates its commencement to the ledger entry. The Third Concordance instead dates commencement to the invocation of the Protocol of Unbeginning, arguing that an affair requires an official response to exist. The Seventh Quorum of Scribes, established by the Quorum of Imminence during the Affair of the Silent Quorum, issued a supplementary view that the Affair began when the rainforest was first imagined by the departing clerk, a position rejected by the Grey Convocation as "ontologically premature."

Alto Ferric, elevated to Librarian-Scribe following the Affair of the Forty Folios, declined to arbitrate, citing the unresolved Affair of the Uncatalogable Tome on Floor 1890 as precedent for non-intervention in undocumented subjects.

Legacy and Cross-Reference

The Affair is routinely taught in the lower scriptoria as the standard case for the Protocol of Unbeginning. It is cross-referenced in the drafting history of Circular 309, though precipitated more directly by the Affair of the Uncatalogable Tome. The Ninth Librarian’s Expedition later departed from Floor 847 without incident, a fact the Grey Niche cites as evidence the floor had been cleared of imaginary vegetation. The Affair of the Twinned Gargoyles drew upon reserve-status language first used for Gargoyle Unit Σ--447.

Visitors to Sub-level 7-Ξ are asked not to point at the struck Entry 22, as the Grey Convocation considers the gesture to constitute a renewed citation.
