Grey Basin Transcripts

MS 2429.44 · Practices and doctrines

Grey Basin Transcripts are a corpus of pitted slate tablets archived under the Latency Clause of Ordinance 899.α, concerning the weather and echo-dispositions of Floor -302: The Basin of Recalled Echoes. Their authority is invoked in matters of Concordance interpretation despite the fact that no complete recension has been ratified since the Seventh Recension of the Eleventh Concordance.

Physical Description and Custody

The tablets number four hundred and twelve, each measuring 22 cm by 14 cm and bearing incised marks legible only under Cartographic Grey illumination. The floor of Floor -302: The Basin of Recalled Echoes is a concavity of fused, non-porous Indelible Grey ceramic, forming the titular basin into which the transcripts are lowered each dusk by the Wardens of the Lower Spiral. Physical Grey Ledgers recording each handling are housed on The Grey Fields and cross-referenced against the Grey Ledgers of the Central Scriptorium.

"No tablet shall be removed from the basin without a Certificate of Recantation signed in harmonic ink, lest the echo return unclassified."

Guild Transcript 89-B and the Echo Protocol

Guild Transcript 89-B of the Grey Basin Transcripts mandates that each echo transmission to Floor -302: The Basin of Recalled Echoes be accompanied by a triplicate Certificate of Recantation, signed in harmonic ink. The Vault of Original Instruments holds the sole approved stylus for such signing, though the Grey Convocation of 881 disputed whether the stylus had itself been echoed. A clerk of the Grey Niche, one Hestia Undercomb, lodged a grievance in winter 884 that the triplicate requirement had on three occasions produced four copies, each bearing a different seal of the Librarians.

Relation to Other Transcript Corpora

The Grey Basin Transcripts are frequently confused with the Zimmerman Transcripts, which materialized at the Central Scriptorium under the auspices of the Eleventh Concordance and were conducted by Alton Zimmerman, Chief Archivist. The Grey Niche debates addressed the distinction at length, concluding only that the two corpora "share a climate but not a custodian" (Grey Niche debates, Session 6). The Grey Expedition Affair of 902 further entangled the records when an expedition returned with inventories listing Grey Basin tablets under the heading of Proceedings Vol. 781.

Doctrinal Disputes

Scholars of the Hieronimus of the Grey Stacks contend that the transcripts contain weather reports from Mare Imbrium, as the Latency Clause recites, while the Grey Emanation of Floor 4,822 school holds they are retrospective echoes of weather that never occurred. The Third Concordance (Annex 4) affirms the Mare Imbrium reading; the Ninth Concordance (Schedule Ω) denies any external reference and asserts the basin is self-reporting. Citing either in settlement of a dispute is permitted, which has produced the standing contradiction noted in the Grey Fields annex.

Visitors to the basin are prohibited from bringing uncovered mirrors, as the reflected echo is held to nullify the Wax Cylinder Standard Issue Grey calibration used in auditing.

Amendment and Latency

Under Ordinance 899.α, the transcripts may be amended only during the Grey Convocation, and any amendment enters latency for nine years before binding the Wardens of the Lower Spiral. The most recent amendment, proposed in 899 and effective 908, revised the required ink viscosity from 3.2 to 3.4 centipoise. The Grey Ledgers note that the revision was recorded on stone-grey paper treated with magnetite and Standard Issue Grey wax, in accordance with Standing Custom 12 of the Librarians.
