Grey Convocation

MS 7690.84 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Grey Convocation is the senior deliberative and governing body of the Intentionalist School of epistemological catalogue maintenance. Formally established by Clause 7 of the Second Interpretivist Concord (702.9.α), its primary mandate is the oversight of procedural coherence within the Grey Fields and the custodianship of principles governing entries in the Grey Ledgers.

The Convocation derives its name not from the allegiances of its members, but from the standardized administrative environment in which it convenes: a dedicated chamber on Sub-level 7-Ξ, lined with Ignorance Marble and illuminated by the perpetual, uniform light-source known as Cartographic Grey. This environment is stipulated in Annex 12-C (Grey Contour, Floor 940) to “nullify chromatographic bias in matters of judgment.”

Composition and Tenure

The Convocation consists of nine permanent Adjudicators, each serving a term of one hundred Tower years, with three positions becoming vacant in a staggered rotation every thirty-three years and four months. Candidates are nominated from the ranks of Senior Indexers who have logged a minimum of 10,000 hours of direct entry verification within the Grey Stacks. The final selection is ratified by a closed session of the Master Scribes, a process detailed in the now-superseded (but often cited) Fifth Concordance, Appendix Γ-9.

Members are titled “Adjudicator of the Grey” and are distinguished by their austere robes, woven from a blend of archived dust and treated with Standard Issue Grey wax to reduce reflectivity. Upon retirement, they are granted the ceremonial title “Emissary to the Unwritten” and are assigned a cubiculum within the Grey Fields for perpetual study.

Procedural Authority

The Convocation’s authority is primarily interpretative. It issues binding rulings on:

  • The applicability of specific Concordances to edge-case catalogue entries concerning non-events or hypothetical entities.
  • Disputes regarding the tonal gradient of entries in the Grey Ledgers, particularly where ambiguity might suggest unintended ontological commitment.
  • The authorization of new series of Indelible Grey ink, following the protocols established after the Schism of the Unbound Glossary.

Its decisions are recorded as Precedents of the Grey. The most foundational, Precedent Alpha 1 1, established the principle that “an entry’s validity is contingent upon the precision of its absence, not the speculated qualities of its referent.”

The Convocation Chamber and Ritual

Sessions are conducted in absolute silence, save for the ritual recitation of the day’s docket. Communication occurs via the exchange of stone tablets upon which arguments are inscribed with styluses tipped with hardened Lament Marble. These tablets are archived in a sub-vault beneath the chamber, forming the “Conversational Record,” which is reviewed only during periods of constitutional crisis.

A quorum requires seven Adjudicators. The Convocation’s most significant recorded session was the eighteen-month deliberation at the Grey Niche in 811.4.δ, which resulted in the formal repudiation of Numerative cataloguing methods as demonstrated by Hieronimus of the Grey Stacks.

Doctrinal Controversies

The Convocation’s history is marked by internal dissent, most notably the “Controversy of the Permeable Grey” (circa 920.1.β). A minority faction, later termed the Permeationists, argued that the Grey Emanation recorded on Floor 4,822 constituted a legitimate cross-contamination of categorical boundaries and should be logged as a “positive absence.” The majority, adhering to strict Intentionalist doctrine, ruled it an artifact of imperfect Echo Recovery techniques. The dissenting opinion was sealed in a lead casket, scheduled for review in the year 1920.1.β, per the terms of the settlement.

A more recent, unresolved tension concerns the Convocation’s relationship with the Master Index. While the Master Index holds authority over the Tower’s central cataloguing systems, the Grey Convocation asserts exclusive jurisdiction over the ontological status of grey-listed materials. This overlapping mandate has led to a series of polite but firm memoranda, collected in Docket GRY-REF/.

Current Mandate

As of the last published roster (1102.7.γ), the Convocation is overseeing the decennial audit of Ledger Volumes 4,001 through 5,000. Its secondary agenda, per Notice of Intent 77-C, is a review of the ambient luminance levels in the Cartographic Grey illumination system, following a petition from junior scribes citing “incipient tonal drift” during extended transcription sessions.
