Biennial Symposium on Ontological Drift

MS 0885.89 · Events and incidents

Biennial Symposium on Ontological Drift is a recurring deliberative convocation held on Floor 88α to assess, contest, and recertify the Tower's standing measures against Semantic Drift, Doctrinal Drift, and the broader category of unplanned subject mutation. Convened once every two Tower-years under the authority of Second Concordance, Clause 11, the Symposium is distinct from the Biennial Inquest of Numbers and the Biennial Verification, though all three have on occasion been scheduled to overlap, producing what the Symposium of the Damp Proof termed "a congestion of audits" in its ruling of VR 388.

Origins and Institutional Basis

The Biennial Symposium on Ontological Drift was first convened in Cycle 6,910 following the provisional collapse of the Chamber of Measured Drift, whose records had themselves undergone Designation Drift to the point that no two floors agreed on its jurisdiction. The Log of Unanswered Questions authorised the interim assembly, and the Third Concordance later formalised it in Annex 12 as "a standing check upon the tendency of catalogued subjects to become other than catalogued." The Symposium's chair is appointed by the Symposium of Unanswered Queries, a practice the Metaphysical Cartel has twice petitioned to reverse by citing "persistent ontological drift" in the appointment rolls themselves.

Unlike the Symposium on Latent Forewords, which concerns prefatory materials never attached to a volume, the Biennial Symposium addresses subjects already shelved. Its writ does not extend to the Damp Vaults, whose humidity-regulated boundaries are defined elsewhere by the Symposium of the Damp Proof.

Procedure and Recorded Sessions

Each session opens with the reading of the Retroactive Drift Assessment for the preceding biennium, a document prepared by the Scriptorium and delivered through the Anteroom of Unfinished Symphonies under seal. The Ninth Session (Cycle 7,204) is notable for having confirmed a measurable instance of Nominative Drift in the holdings of Floor 312, where a catalogue of imaginary coronations had, over eleven years, become a catalogue of imaginary funerals without any recorded editorial act.

In VR 401 the Symposium ruled that Lingual/Nominative Drift and Semantic Drift must be logged in separate ledgers, a position the Symposium of Unanswered Queries contested in its own founding year, arguing the distinction was "a clerical convenience mistaken for an ontological boundary." The disagreement remains unresolved; the Proceedings from the 947th Symposium on Nomic Paradox, originally catalogued on Floor 441, are cited by both sides.

"No floor shall be adjudged drifted beyond tolerance who has not first been offered the remedy of Anchoring in the form prescribed by the Recension of Garmon."

— Second Concordance, Clause 11, Sub-annex β

Disputes Concerning the Great Drift

The relationship between the Symposium's mandate and the Great Ontological Drift of Cycle 7,422 is a matter of standing scholarly disagreement. The Symposium of the Damp Proof holds that the Great Drift was a singular event outside biennial competence, whereas the Catalogical Stability office maintains the Symposium ought to have flagged the precursor signs two cycles earlier. The Tolerance for Dimensional Drift is routinely distinguished from such events, and the Drift-Sheen phenomenon observed on spiral stairwells is excluded from the Symposium's agenda by explicit provision of Third Concordance, Annex 4.

Clerk Hestrom of Floor 88α filed a grievance in VR 455 arguing that the Symposium's quorum had not been met because three appointed delegates were, at the time, subjects undergoing Doctrinal Drift and therefore not competent to count themselves present. The grievance was dismissed by the Symposium of Unanswered Queries on the ground that "a delegate in drift is still a delegate until recatalogued," a phrase later inscribed above the eastern aperture of Floor 88α.

Physical Arrangement and Visitor Protocol

The Symposium occupies the long gallery of Floor 88α, lit by apertures aligned to the Tower's nominal noon. Sessions are open to any Librarian in good standing, though attendees are forbidden from bringing more than one unlabelled volume into the gallery, as the additional weight was found in Cycle 7,011 to precipitate minor Tolerance for Dimensional Drift in the floor's southern shelf.

Current Status and Outstanding Rulings

The most recent Biennial Symposium (VR 472) concluded without a definitive finding on whether the Anchoring remedy must precede or follow the Retroactive Drift Assessment. A ruling is pending before the Symposium of Unanswered Queries, which has noted a procedural dispute with the Anteroom of Unfinished Symphonies regarding the timing of the sealed delivery. Until resolved, Floor 88α continues to observe the practice of the Third Concordance as locally interpreted, and the Metaphysical Cartel retains its right to petition for recalibration.
